1And the whole earth was initially of one language, and one speech. 2And as they journeyed from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they settled there. 3And they said to one another, “Come, let us make brick, and bake them thoroughly”. And they used brick for stone, and slime (tar) for mortar. 4And they said, “Let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach up to heaven; and make a name (identity) for ourselves, so we are not scattered all over the earth.” 5And the LORD came down to see their city and tower, which they had built. 6And the LORD said, “If these people are united, with one language; this may be only the beginning of what they will do: and nothing will restrain them from what they imagine to do. 7Come, let Us go down, and confuse their language, so that they will not understand each another”. 8So the LORD scattered them abroad from there across the face of all the earth: and they stopped building the city. 9That is why the name of it called “Babel”; because it was there that LORD confounded the language of all the earth; and the LORD scattered them from there across the face of all the earth.

10These are the generations of Shem: Shem was a hundred years old, and he fathered Arpachshad (Arphaxad) two years after the flood: 11And Shem lived after he fathered Arpachshad five hundred years, fathering sons and daughters. 12And after living thirty-five years, he fathered Shelah: 13And Arpachshad lived after he fathered Shelah four hundred three years, fathering sons and daughters. 14And after Shelah lived thirty years, he fathered Eber: 15And Shelah lived four hundred three years after he fathered Eber, having sons and daughters. 16And Eber lived thirty-four years, and fathered Peleg: 17And Eber lived four hundred thirty years after he fathered Peleg, and had sons and daughters. 18And after thirty years, Peleg fathered Reu: 19And Peleg lived after he fathered Reu two hundred nine years, and had sons and daughters. 20And Reu lived thirty-two years, and fathered Serug: 21And Reu lived two hundred seven years after he fathered Serug, and had sons and daughters. 22And Serug lived thirty years, and fathered Nahor: 23And Serug lived two hundred years after he fathered Nahor, and had sons and daughters. 24And Nahor lived twenty-nine years, and fathered Terah: 25And Nahor lived one hundred nineteen years after he fathered Terah and had sons and daughters. 26And Terah lived seventy years, and fathered Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

27Now these are the generations of Terah: Terah fathered Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran fathered Lot. 28And Haran died while his father Terah was still living in his native land of Ur of the Chaldeans. 29And Abram and Nahor took wives: the name of Abram's wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor's wife was Milcah, a daughter of Haran, the father of both Milcah, and of Iscah. 30But Sarai was barren; she had no child. 31And Terah took his son, Abram, and Lot, his grandson, the son of Haran, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, Abram's wife; and they set out from Ur of the Chaldeans, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came to Haran, where they settled. 32And Terah lived two hundred five years, before dying in Haran.
