4This is account the creation of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God created the earth and the heavens, 5And neither plants, herbs or grain had sprung up or were growing on earth,; for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was no one to till or tend the ground. 6But a mist came up from the earth, and watered the whole surface of the ground. 7And then the LORD God formed man out of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

8And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there He put the man whom He had formed. 9And the LORD God caused every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food to grow out of the ground; and in the middle of the garden was the tree of life, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. 10And a river flowed out of Eden to water the garden; and from there it parted into four headwaters. 11The name of the first is Pishon; which winds through the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold; 12And the gold of that land is good; and bdellium (aromatic resin) and the onyx stone were also there. 13And the name of the second river is Gihon; which winds through the whole land of Ethiopia. 14And the name of the third river is Hiddekel (Tigris); which goes toward the east of Ashur (Assyria). And the fourth river is the Euphrates. 15And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to till it and to tend it. 16And the LORD God commanded the man, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat: 17But you must not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; for in the day you eat of it, you shall surely die.”

18And the LORD God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.” 19And out of the ground the LORD God had formed every animal of the field, and every bird of the air; and brought them to Adam, to see what he would call them: and whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name 20And Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every wild animal; but for Adam there was not found a suitable helper for him. 21And so the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam; and while he slept, and He took one of his ribs, and then closed the opening in his flesh; 22And from the rib that the LORD God had taken from man, He made a woman, and brought her to the man. 23And Adam said, “This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘Woman’, because she was taken out of man”. 24For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother, and shall be joined to his wife; and they shall be one flesh. 25And they were both naked, but neither the man nor his wife felt any was shame.
