NOW it came to pass when David dwelt in his house, David said to Nathan the prophet, Behold, I dwell in a house which is covered with the beams of cedars, but the ark of the covenant of the LORD is resting in the midst of the tent of hair of goats.

Then Nathan said to David, Go and do all that is in your heart.

And it came to pass that same night, the word of the LORD came to Nathan the prophet, saying,

Go and thus say to my servant David, You shall not build me a house to dwell in;

For I have not dwelt in a house since the day that I brought up Israel out of Egypt to this day; but I moved from tent to tent.

Behold, wherever I have walked with all Israel, did I speak a word to any of the judges of Israel whom I commanded to judge my people Israel, saying, Why have you not built me a house which is covered with cedars?

Now therefore thus shall you say to my servant David, Thus says the LORD of hosts: I took you from the sheepfold, even from following the sheep, that you should be king over my people Israel;

And I have been with you wheresoever you went and have destroyed your enemies from before you, and I have made you a great name, like the name of the great men who are on the earth.
