Now in the church {ekklēsian} at Antioch there were prophets and teachers {didaskaloi}: Barnabas (son of encouragement), Simeon called Niger, Lucius (light) of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod (heroic) the tetrarch), and Saul (asked for).

While they were worshiping the Lord {Kyriō} and fasting, the Holy Spirit {Hagion Pneuma} said, “Set apart for Me Barnabas (son of encouragement) and Saul (asked for) for the work to which I have called them.

And after they had fasted and prayed, they laid their hands on them and sent them off.

So Barnabas and Saul, sent forth by the Holy Spirit {Hagiou Pneumatos}, went down to Seleucia and sailed from there to Cyprus.

When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God {Theou} in the Jewish synagogues. And John (YHWH is gracious) was with them as their helper.

They traveled through the whole island as far as Paphos, where they found a Jewish sorcerer and false prophet named Bar-Jesus,

an attendant of the proconsul, Sergius (servant) Paulus. The proconsul, a man of intelligence, summoned Barnabas (son of encouragement) and Saul (asked for) because he wanted to hear the word of God {Theou}.

But Elymas the sorcerer (for that is what his name means) opposed them and tried to turn the proconsul from the faith.

Then Saul (asked for), who was also called Paul (humble), filled with the Holy Spirit {Hagiou Pneumatos}, looked directly at Elymas

and said, “O child of the devil {diabolou} and enemy of all righteousness, you are full of all kinds of deceit and trickery! Will you never stop perverting the straight ways of the Lord {Kyriou}?

Now look (Behold), the hand of the Lord {Kyriou} is against you, and for a time you will be blind and unable to see the light of the sun. Immediately mist and darkness came over him, and he groped about, seeking someone to lead him by the hand.

When the proconsul saw what had happened, he believed (had faith), for he was astonished at the teaching {didachē} about the Lord {Kyriou}.
