5 Now there was at the citadel of Susa (lily) a Jewish man from the tribe of Benjamin (son of the right hand) named Mordecai (little man) son of Jair (he enlightens), the son of Shimei (renowned), the son of Kish (bent).

6 He had been carried into exile from Jerusalem (city of peace) by Nebuchadnezzar (may Nebo protect the crown) king of Babylon (confusion by mixing) among those taken captive with Jeconiah (Jehoiachin) king of Judah (praised).

7 And Mordecai had brought up Hadassah (myrtle) (that is, Esther (star)), the daughter of his uncle, because she did not have a father or mother. The young woman was lovely in form and appearance, and when her father and mother had died, Mordecai (little man) had taken her as his own daughter.
