24 Those who were sent were from the Pharisees. 25 And they asked him and said to him, Why then do you baptize, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor a prophet? 26 John answered and said to them, I baptize with water; but among you stands one whom you do not know; 27 This is the one who comes after me, and is ahead of me, the one even the strings of whose shoes I am not good enough to untie. 28 These things happened in Bethany, at the Jordan crossing, where John was baptizing.
