5 They answered Him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” He says to them, “I am He.” Now Judas, who is delivering Him up, also had been standing with them. 6 Therefore when He said to them, “I am He,” they drew toward the back and fell to the ground. 7 Again, therefore, He questioned them, “Whom do you? seek?” And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.” 8 Jesus answered, “I said to you? that I am He. Therefore if you? seek Me, allow these to go away,” 9 so that the word that He had spoken might be fulfilled: “Those whom You have given Me, I did not lose any of them, not one.” 10 Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. Now the servant’s name was Malchus. 11 Therefore Jesus said to Peter, “Put the sword into the sheath! The cup that the Father has given Me, shall I not drink it?” 12 Then the cohort and the commander and the officers of the Jews took hold of Jesus and bound Him. 13 And they led Him away to Annas first; for he was father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest the same year. 14 Now Caiaphas was the one having given counsel to the Jews that it is profitable for one man to perish for the people. 15 And Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Now since that disciple was known to the high priest, he also entered with Jesus into the court of the high priest. 16 But Peter stood at the door outside. Therefore the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the doorkeeper and brought in Peter. 17 Therefore the servant girl, the doorkeeper, says to Peter, “Are you not also of the disciples of this man?” He says, “I am not.” 18 Now the servants and the officers were standing, having made a fire of coals, for it was cold and they were warming themselves. And Peter was also standing with them and warming himself. 19 Then the high priest questioned Jesus concerning His disciples and concerning His teaching. 20 Jesus answered him, “I have spoken openly to the world. I always taught in the synagogue and in the temple, where all the Jews come together; and I spoke nothing in secret. 21 Why do you question Me? Question those having heard what I spoke to them. Behold, they know what I said.” 22 Now on His having said these things, one of the officers standing by gave a slap to Jesus, having said, “Do You answer the high priest thus?” 23 Jesus answered him, “If I spoke evil, testify concerning the evil; but if rightly, why do you strike Me?” 24 Then Annas sent Him, bound, to Caiaphas the high priest. 25 Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. Therefore they said to him, “Are you not also one of His disciples?” He denied it and said, “I am not.” 26 One of the servants of the high priest, being a kinsman of him whose ear Peter had cut off, says, “Did I not see you in the garden with Him?” 27 Again, then, Peter denied it, and immediately a rooster crowed. 28 Then they are leading Jesus from Caiaphas into the Praetorium. Now it was early, and they did not enter into the Praetorium, so that they should not be defiled, but might eat the Passover. 29 Therefore Pilate went forth out to them and said, “What accusation do you? bring against this man?” 30 They answered and said to him, “If He were not doing evil, we would not have delivered Him up to you.” 31 Therefore Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves and judge Him according to your? law.” The Jews said to him, “It is not permitted to us to put anyone to death,” 32 so that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled, which He said signifying what death He was about to die. 33 Therefore Pilate entered again into the Praetorium, and he called Jesus and said to Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” 34 Jesus answered, “Do you say this from yourself, or did others say it to you concerning Me?” 35 Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your nation and the chief priests delivered You up to me. What did You do?” 36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world; if My kingdom were of this world, My attendants would fight so that I would not be delivered up to the Jews. But now My kingdom is not from here.” 37 Therefore Pilate said to Him, “Then You are a king!” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, so that I may testify to the truth. Everyone being of the truth hears My voice.” 38 Pilate says to Him, “What is truth?” And having said this, he went out again to the Jews and says to them, “I find no guilt in Him. 39 But it is your? custom that I should release to you? one at the Passover; therefore do you? wish that I should release to you? the King of the Jews?” 40 Then they cried out again, saying, “Not this one, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a robber.
