John 5:1-40 ▼

1 After these things there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Hebrew called Bethesda, having five porches.

3 In these were lying a multitude of those ailing, blind, lame, and withered.

5 And a certain man was there, being thirty and eight years in his ailment.

6 Jesus, having seen this one lying and having known that he has been a long time already, says to him, “Do you want to become well?”

7 The one ailing answered Him, “Sir, I do not have a man, that when the water might be stirred, he might put me into the pool; and while I am going, another goes down before me.”

8 Jesus says to him, “Arise, take up your mat, and walk.”

9 And immediately the man became well, and he took up his mat and was walking. And it was the Sabbath on that day.

10 Therefore the Jews were saying to the one having been healed, “It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to take up your mat.”

11 But he answered them, “The One having made me well, that One said to me, ‘Take up your mat and walk.’”

12 Therefore they asked him, “Who is the man having said to you, ‘Take it up and walk’?”

13 But the one having been healed did not know who it is, for Jesus moved away, a crowd being in the place.

14 After these things Jesus finds him in the temple and said to him, “Behold, you have become well. Sin no more, so that something worse might not happen to you.”

15 The man went away and declared to the Jews that Jesus is the One having made him well.

16 And because of this, the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because He was doing these things on the Sabbath.

17 But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.”

18 Therefore because of this, the Jews were seeking more to kill Him, because not only was He breaking the Sabbath, but He was also calling God His own Father, making Himself equal to God.

19 Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you?, the Son is able to do nothing from Himself, if not anything He may see the Father doing; for whatever He may do, these things the Son also does likewise.

20 For the Father loves the Son and shows Him all things that He Himself does. And He will show Him greater works than these, so that you? may marvel.

21 For just as the Father raises the dead and makes alive, thus also the Son makes alive whom He wills.

22 For the Father judges no one, but He has given all judgment to the Son,

23 so that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. The one not honoring the Son does not honor the Father, the One having sent Him.

24 Truly, truly, I say to you? that the one hearing My word and believing the One having sent Me has eternal life and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.

25 Truly, truly, I say to you? that an hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those having heard will live.

26 For just as the Father has life in Himself, so also He gave to the Son to have life in Himself.

27 And He gave Him authority to do judgment, because He is the Son of Man.

28 Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming in which all those in the tombs will hear His voice,

29 and they will come out—those having done good to the resurrection of life, and those having practiced evil to the resurrection of judgment.

30 I am able to do nothing from Myself. Just as I hear, I judge; and My judgment is just, because I do not seek My will, but the will of the One having sent Me.

31 If I testify concerning Myself, My testimony is not true.

32 It is another testifying concerning Me, and I know that the testimony that He testifies concerning Me is true.

33 You? have sent to John, and he has testified to the truth.

34 Now I do not receive testimony from man, but I say these things so that you? may be saved.

35 He was the lamp burning and shining, and you? were willing to exult for an hour in his light.

36 But I have testimony greater than that of John. For the works that the Father has given to Me so that I should complete them, the same works that I do, testify concerning Me that the Father has sent Me.

37 And the One having sent Me, the Father Himself, has testified concerning Me. You? have neither heard His voice at any time, nor have you? seen His form.

38 And you? do not have His word remaining in you?, for you? do not believe Him whom He sent.

39 You? search the Scriptures because you? think to have eternal life in them, and these are they testifying concerning Me;

40 and you? are not willing to come to Me so that you? may have life.
