And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led in the Spirit in the wilderness,

being tempted forty days by the devil. And He ate nothing in those days, and on their having ended, He was hungry.

And the devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, speak to this stone, that it might become bread.”

And Jesus answered to him, “It has been written: ‘Not on bread alone shall the man live.’”

And having led Him up, he showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.

And the devil said to Him, “I will give to You all this authority and their glory; for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I wish.

You, therefore, if You worship before me, all will be Yours.”

And answering, Jesus said to him, “It has been written: ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only shall you serve.’”

And he led Him to Jerusalem and set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and he said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here.

For it has been written: ‘He will command His angels concerning You to guard You carefully,

and on hands they will lift You up, lest ever You may strike Your foot against a stone.’”

And answering, Jesus said to him, “It has been said, ‘You shall not test the Lord your God.’”

And the devil, having ended every temptation, departed from Him until an opportune time.

And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and a report went out through all the surrounding region concerning Him.

And He was teaching in their synagogues, being glorified by all.

And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up; and according to His custom, He entered into the synagogue on the day of the Sabbaths, and He rose up to read.

And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to Him, and having unrolled the scroll, He found the place where it was written:

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because of which He anointed Me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim deliverance to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to send forth the oppressed in deliverance,

to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”
