17 For Herod himself, having sent, seized John and bound him in prison because of Herodias, the wife of Philip his brother, because he married her. 18 For John was saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have the wife of your brother.” 19 And Herodias was holding it against him and was wanting to kill him, and she was not able. 20 For Herod was afraid of John, knowing him as a man righteous and holy, and he was keeping him safe.
