Matthew 4:1-13 ▼

1 Then Jesus (YHWH saves) was led by the Spirit {Pneumatos} into the wilderness (solitary place) to be tempted by the devil {diabolou}.

2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, He was hungry.

3 The tempter came to Him and said, “If You are the Son of God {Theou}, tell these stones to become bread.

4 But Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word {rhēmati} that comes from the mouth of God .’

5 Then the devil {diabolos} took Him to the holy (set apart) city and set Him on the pinnacle of the temple.

6 “If You are the Son of God {Theou}, he said, “throw Yourself down. For it is written: ‘He will command His angels (messengers) concerning You, and they will lift You up in their hands, so that You will not strike Your foot against a stone .’

7 Jesus (YHWH saves) replied, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord {Kyrion} your God to the test .’

8 Again, the devil {diabolos} took Him to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory {doxan}.

9 “All this I will give You, he said, “if You will fall down and worship me.

10 “Away from Me, Satan (the adversary)! Jesus (YHWH saves) told him. “For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord {Kyrion} your God {theon} and serve Him only .’

11 Then the devil {diabolos} left Him, and angels (messengers) came and ministered to Him.

12 When Jesus heard that John (YHWH is gracious) had been imprisoned, He withdrew to Galilee (circuit).

13 Leaving Nazareth (branch), He went and lived in Capernaum (village of comfort), which is by the sea in the region of Zebulun (exalted house) and Naphtali (my struggle),
