Align leadership with God's will?
How can we ensure our leadership aligns with God's will today?

Setting the Scene: 1 Kings 15:33

“In the third year of Asa king of Judah, Baasha son of Ahijah became king over all Israel, and he reigned in Tirzah twenty-four years.”

What Went Wrong with Baasha

• Rose to power through conspiracy (1 Kings 15:27)

• “He did evil in the sight of the LORD and walked in the way of Jeroboam” (1 Kings 15:34)

• Ruled for decades yet never turned from idolatry (1 Kings 16:1–4)

• Left a legacy of judgment rather than blessing

Timeless Marks of God-Aligned Leadership

• Reverence for God’s Word

– “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105)

• Personal integrity

– “The righteous man walks in his integrity; blessed are his children after him.” (Proverbs 20:7)

• Servant-hearted authority

– “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.” (Matthew 20:26)

• Dependence on prayer

– “Trust in the LORD with all your heart.” (Proverbs 3:5–6)

• Accountability and teachability

– “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.” (Proverbs 15:22)

Practical Steps for Today’s Leaders

1. Daily submit plans to Scripture; let the Bible correct agendas.

2. Cultivate transparent relationships—invite godly critique.

3. Prioritize moral example over charisma; character sustains influence.

4. Serve constituents sacrificially, reflecting Christ’s model (John 13:14–15).

5. Measure success by obedience, not popularity or profit.

How Followers Can Encourage Godly Leadership

• Pray consistently for those in authority (1 Timothy 2:1–2).

• Affirm righteous decisions; respectfully challenge ungodly ones (Acts 5:29).

• Live honorably under leadership, pointing leaders to Christ by example (1 Peter 2:12–17).

• Vote, advise, or serve in ways that uphold biblical values (Proverbs 29:2).

Scripture Cross-References

2 Chronicles 16:9 — God strengthens leaders whose hearts are fully His.

Proverbs 16:12 — “Kings detest wrongdoing, for a throne is established through righteousness.”

Romans 13:1 — All authority is under God; leaders answer to Him.

1 Timothy 3:1–13 — Qualifications that anchor church leadership can guide civic leadership as well.

Living It Out

Baasha’s story warns that a long tenure means nothing when a leader rejects God’s ways. Lasting influence comes only when authority rests on obedience, humility, and reverence for Scripture. Aligning leadership with God’s will begins in the heart, is shaped by His Word, and is sustained by ongoing surrender to Christ.
