Align leadership with God's will?
How can we ensure our leadership aligns with God's will, unlike Jehoiachin's?

Jehoiachin’s Three-Month Warning

“Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months… And he did evil in the sight of the LORD, just as his father had done.” (2 Kings 24:8–9)

Why Did His Leadership Collapse So Fast?

• He inherited a throne but ignored the God who gave it.

• He followed family tradition instead of the Lord’s commands.

• He trusted political bargaining with Babylon rather than covenant faithfulness.

Result: exile, loss, and a nation dragged into judgment.

Common Signals of Misaligned Leadership

• Personal sin tolerated or excused (James 1:14-15).

• Scripture sidelined by cultural pressure (Isaiah 8:20).

• Accountability structures dismantled (Proverbs 11:14).

• Short-term relief chosen over long-term obedience (Matthew 16:26).

Four Anchors to Keep Leadership Aligned with God’s Will

1. Saturate in God’s Word

Deuteronomy 17:18-19: “When he is seated on his royal throne, he is to write for himself a copy of this law… and read it all the days of his life.”

– Daily reading, memorization, and public honoring of Scripture guard against drifting.

2. Cultivate Humble Dependence

Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart… and He will make your paths straight.”

– Regular fasting, confession, and counsel remind a leader that the throne belongs to God.

3. Establish God-Centered Accountability

1 Timothy 3:2-7; Titus 1:6-9 set character qualifications that elders and modern leaders alike must meet.

– Invite godly peers to ask hard questions; transparency is protection, not weakness.

4. Practice Immediate Repentance

Psalm 32:5: “I acknowledged my sin to You… and You forgave the guilt of my sin.”

– Quick repentance keeps a short ledger with God and prevents small cracks from becoming catastrophic breaches.

Guarding the Heart: Personal Check-List

• Am I more concerned with God’s approval than public opinion?

• Is Scripture shaping my decisions or merely decorating them?

• Do trusted believers regularly speak into my life?

• When the Spirit convicts, do I respond right away?

Living Lessons from a Fallen Crown

Jehoiachin shows that position, pedigree, or youthful energy cannot substitute for obedience. A leader grounded in Scripture, humble reliance, godly accountability, and swift repentance walks a path God can honor—and the people can follow with confidence.

Compare Jehoiachin's actions with other kings who 'did evil in the sight.'
