Apply Jonathan's courage today?
How can we apply Jonathan's courage in 1 Samuel 20:35 to our lives today?

Setting the Scene

“ In the morning Jonathan went out to the field for the appointment with David, and a young boy was with him.” (1 Samuel 20:35)

• Saul’s murderous hatred for David is now public.

• Jonathan has pledged loyalty to David before the LORD (20:13–17).

• By walking into that field Jonathan risks being seen aiding the one Saul wants dead. His courage is active, deliberate, and faith-driven.

What Jonathan’s Courage Looks Like

• Resolve under pressure – Jonathan does not stall or hide; he “went out.”

• Loyalty anchored in covenant – he keeps his word to David (Proverbs 18:24).

• Fear of God above fear of man – he values obedience to God’s purposes more than royal approval (Acts 5:29).

• Wise strategy – courage includes clear planning: arrows, signals, cover of a servant boy (Matthew 10:16).

Why It Matters for Us

We live amid cultural, relational, and spiritual pressures that invite compromise. Jonathan’s example teaches that real courage is:

• Rooted in truth, not popularity (John 17:17).

• Expressed in action, not just conviction (James 2:17).

• Sustained by covenant relationships—first with Christ, then with His people (Romans 12:10).

Living Out Jonathan’s Courage Today

1. Stand for the right person or cause even when it costs.

– Speak truth graciously in workplaces, classrooms, or family gatherings (Ephesians 4:15).

2. Keep covenant commitments.

– Honor marriage vows; keep your word in business; guard confidences (Psalm 15:4).

3. Act promptly on godly convictions.

– Don’t postpone obedience; take the first faithful step “in the morning.”

4. Combine boldness with wisdom.

– Pray, plan, and proceed wisely; courage is not recklessness (Proverbs 14:16).

5. Disciple the next generation.

– Jonathan’s young servant witnesses bravery up close; invite younger believers to observe your faith in action (2 Timothy 2:2).

• Review any promises you have made; fulfill at least one overdue commitment.

• Encourage a friend who is under pressure; your loyalty can strengthen their faith.

• Meditate daily on Psalm 27:1 to replace fear of man with fear of God.
