Apply Rehoboam's example to stewardship?
How can we apply Rehoboam's example to our stewardship of God's resources today?

Rehoboam’s Bronze Shields: A Snapshot of Lost Glory

2 Chronicles 12:11 records, “Whenever the king entered the house of the LORD, the guards would carry the shields, and afterward they would return them to the guardroom.”

• Solomon had forged gold shields for ceremonial display (2 Chronicles 9:15–16). Rehoboam’s rebellion (12:1–2) led to Shishak’s raid (12:9), and the gold was seized. Rehoboam substituted bronze—functional, yet a visible downgrade.

• The narrative is literal history and a living illustration: disobedience diminishes the resources God entrusts to His people.

Recognizing the Source of Our Resources

• Every possession originates with the Lord (Psalm 24:1).

• Israel’s wealth had been granted by God during Solomon’s faithful years (1 Kings 3:13–14). When faith waned, so did the treasure.

• Application: careers, savings, homes, and talents remain God’s property; we are managers, not owners (1 Corinthians 4:2, “Now it is required of stewards that they be found faithful”).

When Compromise Costs Us

• Rehoboam “did not set his heart to seek the LORD” (2 Chronicles 12:14). A half-hearted walk invites loss.

• Disobedience still drains today:

– Neglecting generosity leads to spiritual dryness (Proverbs 11:24–25).

– Ethics sacrificed for gain invite God’s discipline (Proverbs 28:20).

– Idolatrous spending habits erode resources meant for kingdom work (Haggai 1:6–7).

Guarding What Remains

• Bronze shields were guarded each time the king visited the temple—a reminder of what had been forfeited.

• Modern parallels:

– Budget reviews that expose waste.

– Accountability partners who “carry the shields” by asking how we deploy time and money.

– Regular giving that re-centers hearts on God’s house (Malachi 3:10).

Restoration Starts with Obedience

• Even after judgment, God extended mercy: “My wrath shall not be poured out on Jerusalem by the hand of Shishak” (2 Chronicles 12:7).

• Faithful stewardship opens doors for renewed blessing:

Luke 16:10–12—faithfulness with little precedes trust with much.

Proverbs 3:9–10—honor brings overflow.

1 Timothy 6:17–19—generosity stores up “a firm foundation for the coming age.”

Practical Steps for Today

1. Inventory: List assets, income streams, and abilities; acknowledge God as owner.

2. Prioritize: Firstfruits giving before discretionary spending; schedule service before entertainment.

3. Protect: Put safeguards on spending (automatic transfers, clear budgets), just as guards protected the shields.

4. Replace: Where past disobedience caused loss, start afresh—swap credit-driven habits for contentment and discipline.

5. Review: Quarterly evaluate stewardship goals; celebrate progress, correct drift.
