Applying God-given inheritance today?
How can we apply the concept of God-given inheritance in our lives today?

Scripture Focus

“Now to them they gave Shechem, the city of refuge for the manslayer, in the hill country of Ephraim, with its pasturelands, and Gezer with its pasturelands.” (Joshua 21:21)

Original Setting

• The tribe of Levi received no territorial allotment like the other tribes; instead, specific cities and pasturelands were granted to them as their inheritance.

• Shechem was doubly important—both a Levitical city and a city of refuge—signifying a place of ministry, protection, and provision.

• God Himself established and distributed these inheritances, underscoring His personal involvement in the details of His people’s lives (Numbers 18:20; Deuteronomy 10:9).

Key Truths About God-Given Inheritance

• An inheritance is initiated by God, not earned by human effort (Ephesians 1:11).

• It is assigned with purpose: the Levites’ cities enabled them to serve, teach, and mediate worship (Deuteronomy 33:10).

• It always includes God’s provision; the surrounding pasturelands supplied daily needs (Philippians 4:19).

• It often blesses others; Shechem sheltered the needy and symbolized safety (Psalm 46:1).

Bringing It Into Today

What does a God-given inheritance look like for believers now?

• Spiritual standing: “He has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light.” (Colossians 1:12)

• Identity and calling: “You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood.” (1 Peter 2:9)

• Future hope: “An inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you.” (1 Peter 1:4)

Living in the Inheritance

• Receive it by faith. Stop striving for what God has already granted—salvation, forgiveness, adoption (Romans 8:15-17).

• Guard its holiness. Like a city of refuge, let your life be a safe place that reflects God’s character (Matthew 5:14-16).

• Serve from it, not for it. Ministry flows out of security in Christ, not fear of losing your place (Ephesians 2:10).

• Share its resources. The Levites’ pasturelands fed their flocks; our gifts and possessions can feed others’ needs (2 Corinthians 9:8-11).

Encouragement for Everyday Life

• Start each day remembering: you already “have every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms in Christ” (Ephesians 1:3).

• When tempted to compare lots with others, recall that God Himself drew the boundaries for you (Psalm 16:5-6).

• Use your “city” — your home, workplace, church — as a refuge where mercy and truth meet (Micah 6:8).

• Look forward eagerly: today’s faithful stewardship is training for “ruling and reigning” with Christ in His coming kingdom (2 Timothy 2:12; Revelation 22:5).
