Applying firstfruits daily?
How can we apply the principle of firstfruits in our daily lives?

Setting the Scene

“He is to wave the sheaf before the LORD so that it may be accepted on your behalf; the priest shall wave it on the day after the Sabbath.” (Leviticus 23:11)

Israel’s first ripe barley sheaf was lifted up to God before any of the harvest was eaten. The whole crop that followed was considered holy because the first portion had been dedicated to Him.

Understanding Firstfruits

• Acknowledgment of ownership – God gave the harvest; He rightly receives the first share.

• Statement of trust – Giving first means trusting Him to provide the rest.

• Pattern of redemption – “If the firstfruits are holy, so is the whole batch.” (Romans 11:16) The principle points ahead to Christ, “the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.” (1 Corinthians 15:20) His resurrection guarantees ours.

Why Firstfruits Matter Today

Though the agricultural ritual was fulfilled in Christ, the heart behind it still guides believers: we honor the Lord with the first and best of every area of life. “Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your harvest; then your barns will be filled with plenty.” (Proverbs 3:9–10)

Putting Firstfruits into Practice

Time

• Give God the first part of the day in Scripture and prayer before other voices crowd in.

• Set aside the first day of the week for gathered worship (Acts 20:7).

Income

• Decide on a percentage to give off the top of every paycheck before budgeting anything else.

• Whenever unexpected income arrives—rebate, bonus, gift—treat it like a new “harvest” and honor God first.

Talents & Opportunities

• When beginning a new project, ministry, or school term, consciously dedicate the opening moments to God’s glory.

• Use peak energy hours for Kingdom purposes: serving, mentoring, creating resources that bless others.

Relationships

• Teach children early to give and serve, modeling firstfruits living in front of them.

• Offer the first moments of family gatherings or meals to recall God’s faithfulness.

Decisions

• Seek God’s counsel before calling friends, scanning social media, or mapping out plans.

• Submit every new commitment to His will before saying yes.

Guarding the Heart

• Reject legalism: firstfruits flow from gratitude, not earning favor (James 1:18).

• Watch motives: giving first to God means He—and not recognition—gets the honor.

• Cultivate expectancy: trust that He who provided the first will supply the rest.

Blessings of Honoring Firstfruits

• Deepened dependence on the Lord’s provision.

• Tangible reminder that everything belongs to Him.

• Joy of participating in His redemptive pattern: because the first portion is His, the whole is blessed.
