Are we taking God's grace for granted?
How can we discern if we are taking God's grace for granted?

Setting the Context

“As God’s fellow workers, then, we urge you not to receive God’s grace in vain.” (2 Corinthians 6:1)

• Paul has just proclaimed the reconciling work of Christ (5:18-21).

• The plea is urgent and personal—“we urge you”—because grace can be embraced or wasted.

• “In vain” means empty, fruitless, of no effect; the Spirit is warning that neglected grace leads to spiritual barrenness.

Understanding the Warning

• Grace is unearned favor, but it is never permission to drift (Romans 6:1-2).

• Grace carries purpose: salvation that produces good works prepared by God (Ephesians 2:8-10).

• To “receive … in vain” is to gain access to divine resources yet live as though nothing changed (Hebrews 10:29).

Signs We Might Be Taking Grace for Granted

• Ongoing, willful sin without repentance—“For if we deliberately go on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no further sacrifice for sins remains” (Hebrews 10:26).

• Dullness toward God’s Word—hearing it but not doing it (James 1:22).

• Lack of gratitude—grace that no longer amazes soon goes unused (Colossians 3:15-17).

• Absence of holy ambition—Paul said, “But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace to me was not in vain; no, I worked harder than all of them” (1 Corinthians 15:10).

• Indifference to the needs of others—grace teaches us to “live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives” that are zealous for good deeds (Titus 2:11-14).

• Comfort with spiritual compromise—using freedom “as an opportunity for the flesh” instead of serving one another in love (Galatians 5:13).

Practical Steps to Treasure Grace

• Confess quickly: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us” (1 John 1:9).

• Cultivate gratitude: verbalize thanks for specific mercies each day (Psalm 103:2).

• Obey promptly: respond to Scripture the moment the Spirit convicts (John 14:15).

• Serve diligently: channel grace into ministry as “God’s fellow workers” (1 Peter 4:10-11).

• Guard fellowship: stay close to believers who stir up love and good works (Hebrews 10:24-25).

• Keep eternity in view: remember, “We must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ” (2 Corinthians 5:10).

Encouragement to Persevere

• The same grace that saves also empowers: “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9).

• God finishes what He starts: “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion” (Philippians 1:6).

• Therefore, cherish grace, lean on it daily, and let it bear tangible fruit that glorifies the Lord who freely bestowed it.
