Believers' response to God's power?
How should believers respond when witnessing God's power, as seen in Habakkuk 3:7?

Reading the Verse

“I saw the tents of Cushan in distress; the curtains of the land of Midian were trembling.” (Habakkuk 3:7)

What Habakkuk Saw

• “Tents of Cushan” and “curtains of Midian” represent real desert peoples suddenly agitated.

• Their trembling comes from God’s approach, not from human armies.

• The verse continues Habakkuk’s poetic recounting of the Lord marching in salvation power on behalf of His people (cf. Habakkuk 3:3–6).

Witnessing God’s Power Then and Now

Just as distant nomadic tribes shook when God moved, anyone who perceives His unmistakable might faces a decision: how to respond. Scripture gives a consistent pattern.

Fitting Responses

1. Awe-filled Fear

Exodus 19:16—Sinai quaked; the people trembled.

Nahum 1:5—“The mountains quake before Him… the earth trembles.”

• Proper fear acknowledges His absolute sovereignty.

2. Humble Submission

Isaiah 6:5—Isaiah cried, “Woe to me” at a glimpse of holiness.

James 4:10—“Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will exalt you.”

• Recognition of His greatness drives low-hearted surrender.

3. Trust in His Deliverance

Psalm 46:1-3—Though the earth gives way, “God is our refuge.”

• Habakkuk himself shifts from complaint (ch. 1-2) to confidence (3:16-19).

• Power that terrifies enemies secures His people.

4. Whole-hearted Worship

Psalm 29:2—“Ascribe to the LORD the glory due His name.”

Hebrews 12:28-29—Serve with reverence, “for our God is a consuming fire.”

• Worship is the logical overflow of beholding His majesty.

5. Obedient Action

Exodus 14:31—Israel “feared the LORD and believed… and His servant Moses.”

Luke 5:8-11—Peter’s awe led to leaving nets and following Jesus.

• Genuine awe produces concrete obedience.

6. Bold Witness

Acts 2:37-41—Crowds cut to the heart by God’s power in Pentecost preaching responded, and new believers proclaimed Christ.

Psalm 96:3—“Declare His glory among the nations.”

• To know His power is to testify about it.

Living It Out Today

• Start each day remembering God’s unmatched might; let it shape priorities.

• Approach Scripture expectantly, believing every recorded act of power is literal and continues to reveal His character.

• When modern events remind you of His sovereignty—creation’s grandeur, answered prayer, world upheavals—pause to express reverent awe.

• Translate that awe into fresh obedience: repent of any known sin, serve a neighbor, speak the gospel.

• Gather with other believers to celebrate His deeds, mirroring Habakkuk’s song that turned fear into faith.

The trembling tents in Habakkuk 3:7 invite every generation to stand in awe, bow in humility, trust without wavering, worship with passion, obey promptly, and speak boldly—fitting, joyful responses whenever God’s power is on display.
