Compare Jonah 2:4 & Psalm 139:7-10.
Compare Jonah 2:4 with Psalm 139:7-10 on God's omnipresence. What similarities exist?

Opening snapshot

Jonah, trapped in a fish’s belly, and David, pondering the vastness of creation, arrive at the same unshakable truth: God is everywhere, all the time. Let’s hold these two texts side by side and see what they share.

Scripture texts

Jonah 2:4 — “I said, ‘I have been banished from Your sight; yet I will look once more toward Your holy temple.’”

Psalm 139:7-10

“Where can I go to escape Your Spirit?

Where can I flee from Your presence?

If I ascend to the heavens, You are there;

if I make my bed in Sheol, You are there.

If I rise on the wings of the dawn,

if I settle by the farthest sea,

even there Your hand will guide me;

Your right hand will hold me fast.”

Observing the similarities

• Awareness of distance yet certainty of Presence

– Jonah feels “banished,” far from the temple in Jerusalem, yet still turns to the LORD, confident He hears.

– David imagines the farthest heights and deepest depths, yet pronounces, “You are there.”

• Sea imagery and Sheol imagery

– Jonah is literally beneath the waves (cf. Jonah 2:3-6) and calls out from that watery “grave.”

– David lists Sheol and “the farthest sea” as test cases where God remains present.

• Movement from despair to hope

– Jonah pivots from exile to expectation: “I will look once more…”

– David moves from hypothetical flight to the assurance, “Your hand will guide me… hold me fast.”

• Impossibility of hiding

– Jonah’s attempt to flee (Jonah 1:3) fails; in chapter 2 he admits God still sees him.

– David flat-out states no flight path can outrun God’s Spirit.

Digging deeper into omnipresence

• Not limited by geography (Jeremiah 23:23-24).

• Not severed by death or the grave (Romans 8:38-39).

• Present to protect and to discipline (Hebrews 12:6-7; Psalm 23:4).

Living it out

• When circumstances scream “banished,” remember Jonah—look toward the Lord’s dwelling and speak to Him.

• When thoughts wander to “What if I’m too far gone?” echo David—wherever “there” is, His right hand already holds you.

• Worship becomes 24/7, because space cannot confine the One who “fills heaven and earth” (Jeremiah 23:24).

How can Jonah's experience in 2:4 inspire us to trust God's deliverance?
