Ensure church handles funds well?
How can we ensure our church is accountable in handling tithes and offerings?

the pattern from hezekiah’s day

“Then they faithfully brought in the contributions, tithes, and dedicated gifts. Conaniah the Levite was the officer in charge of these things, and his brother Shimei was second.” (2 Chronicles 31:12)

Hezekiah’s reform gives a clear snapshot of financial integrity in God’s house. Building from this verse, here’s how a modern church can mirror that accountability.

clarify the purpose before the people

• Teach regularly that tithes and offerings are worship, not fundraising (Malachi 3:10; Proverbs 3:9).

• Keep the congregation informed about how funds advance kingdom work—missions, benevolence, facility needs (Acts 4:34-35).

appoint proven stewards

• Conaniah and Shimei were Levites already set apart for holy service. Look for those whose lives display faithfulness (Luke 16:10).

• Require multiple, qualified individuals—never a single “gatekeeper” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10).

• Confirm character through the standards of 1 Timothy 3:8-13.

establish written procedures

• Separate duties: collectors, counters, record-keepers, and disbursers (2 Corinthians 8:19-21 “avoiding any criticism”).

• Use sealed offering boxes or electronic giving that leaves an audit trail (2 Chronicles 24:8-11 shows a locked chest).

• Document every step with dated receipts and dual signatures.

practice open transparency

• Provide regular financial reports to members—income, expenses, current balances (Romans 12:17 “do what is right in the eyes of everyone”).

• Publish an annual budget approved by the congregation.

• Conduct independent audits or peer reviews each year.

protect the storehouse

• Deposit funds promptly; never allow offerings to sit unsecured (Proverbs 10:4-5).

• Insure accounts and utilize accountable software.

• Rotate counters and treasurers to prevent complacency.

prioritize generosity and stewardship training

• Equip leaders and members with biblical money principles (2 Corinthians 9:6-8).

• Encourage personal integrity; corporate purity flows from individual hearts (James 1:27).

follow the weekly rhythm

• Adopt Paul’s instruction: “On the first day of every week, each of you is to set something aside” (1 Corinthians 16:2). Regular, orderly giving promotes regular, orderly accounting.

the result

When God’s people “faithfully bring in” the offerings and faithful servants manage them, the church reflects the holiness of the One it serves, resources reach their intended mission, and the watching world sees genuine light.
