Exodus 2:16: God's timing in opportunities?
What does Exodus 2:16 teach about God's timing in providing opportunities?

Setting the Scene in Midian

“Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters, and they came and drew water and filled the troughs to water their father’s flock.” (Exodus 2:16)

Observations from the Verse

• Moses has just arrived in Midian, tired, alone, and sitting by a well (v. 15).

• At that precise moment, seven young women approach to draw water.

• Their routine chore becomes the turning point God will use to reshape Moses’ future.

God’s Precision in Timing

• The appearance of the daughters is not random; it is divinely scheduled.

• Moses needs a safe refuge; they need protection from bullying shepherds (v. 17).

• Both needs intersect at the well, revealing the Lord’s orchestration of converging circumstances.

Psalm 31:15 affirms, “My times are in Your hands.” God’s calendar is never late and never early.

Opportunities Flowing from Divine Timing

Look at the chain reaction launched by this single, timely encounter:

1. Moses defends the women (v. 17).

2. Reuel (also called Jethro) invites Moses home (v. 20).

3. Moses gains a family, a livelihood, and eventually Zipporah as his wife (v. 21).

4. Forty years later, God calls Moses from the very region where this opportunity began (Exodus 3:1-4).

Romans 8:28: “We know that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him.”

5. Israel’s deliverance traces back to this meeting beside a Midianite well.

Living the Lesson Today

• Trust that present routines—commutes, conversations, daily tasks—can become avenues for God’s strategic purposes.

• Like Moses, remain available. Sitting still at the right place can be as Spirit-led as active service (Psalm 37:23).

• Expect God to intertwine your needs with the needs of others, creating mutual blessing.

• Wait confidently: “But when the fullness of time had come, God sent His Son” (Galatians 4:4). If God planned redemption’s hour perfectly, He can schedule today’s smaller details.

How can we apply the hospitality shown in Exodus 2:16 to our lives?
