Honor ancestors, focus on Christ's teachings?
How can we honor our ancestors while maintaining a focus on Christ's teachings?

An ancient tomb that still speaks

“ ‘There they buried Abraham and his wife Sarah, there they buried Isaac and Rebekah, and there I buried Leah.’ ” (Genesis 49:31)

Jacob’s simple burial request was more than sentiment. It rooted his family in a physical reminder of God’s covenant faithfulness across generations.

Why honoring ancestors matters

• God commands it: “Honor your father and your mother” (Exodus 20:12).

• It strengthens faith: our history showcases the Lord’s steady hand.

• It forms identity: we learn who we are by seeing where God has already worked.

Keeping Christ first while we honor

• “He is the head … so that in all things He may have the preeminence” (Colossians 1:18).

• “Anyone who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me” (Matthew 10:37).

• Honor becomes idolatry when ancestors eclipse the Savior; true honor points beyond them to the One they trusted.

Practical ways to honor without losing focus

1. Preserve the stories of faith

– Record testimonies of grandparents and parents.

– Share them at family gatherings, always highlighting God’s grace, not human heroics.

2. Care for the living elders

– Provide material and emotional support (1 Timothy 5:4).

– Let service to them mirror Christ’s sacrificial love (John 13:14-15).

3. Maintain memorials with gospel purpose

– Visit graves, keep them tended, read Scripture on site as Jacob’s sons did at Machpelah.

– Use the moment to remind children of resurrection hope (1 Thessalonians 4:14).

4. Pass on a spiritual inheritance

– “A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children” (Proverbs 13:22).

– Beyond finances, leave Bibles, letters of encouragement, and established habits of worship.

5. Continue the legacy of faith-filled obedience

– Paul praised Timothy’s lineage: “your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice” (2 Timothy 1:5).

– Live so future generations can trace a clear line of devotion that reaches all the way to Christ.

The cloud of witnesses and the finish line

“Since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses … let us fix our eyes on Jesus” (Hebrews 12:1-2). Ancestors cheer us on, but our gaze stays locked on the Author and Finisher of faith. That balance—remembering their footsteps while following His—honors both them and, supremely, Him.
