How can we avoid being like them?
In what ways can we avoid being "like one of them"?

The Historical Snapshot

“On the day you stood aloof, while strangers carried off his wealth and foreigners entered his gates and cast lots for Jerusalem, you were just like one of them.” (Obadiah 1:11)

Edom watched Jerusalem’s downfall with detached curiosity. Their passivity placed them in the same moral category as the invaders. God counts silent complicity as shared guilt.

Why This Matters Today

• Evil still advances when God’s people remain spectators.

• Indifference erodes distinctiveness and dims our witness (Matthew 5:13–16).

• Scripture warns that neutrality in the face of sin is impossible (James 4:17).

Practical Ways to Avoid Being “Like One of Them”

1. Cultivate Vigilant Compassion

• Stay alert to suffering around you (Proverbs 24:11–12).

• Move toward need rather than away from it (Luke 10:33–34).

2. Refuse Complicity Through Silence

• Speak truth even when it costs social capital (Ephesians 4:25).

• Confront injustice graciously but firmly (Isaiah 1:17).

3. Share Tangible Help, Not Mere Sympathy

• Open your resources—time, money, skills—to the oppressed (1 John 3:17–18).

• Practice hospitality; meet practical needs (Romans 12:13).

4. Stand With God’s People in Their Trials

• Pray with and for the persecuted church (Hebrews 13:3).

• Encourage fellow believers facing opposition (1 Thessalonians 5:11).

5. Guard Against Schadenfreude

• Reject any delight in an enemy’s misfortune (Proverbs 24:17–18).

• Ask God to give you His heart toward all people (Ezekiel 36:26).

6. Keep a Soft, Repentant Heart

• Repent quickly when apathy creeps in (Psalm 139:23–24).

• Invite accountability from mature believers (Galatians 6:1–2).

Supporting Passages for Reflection

• “Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.” (James 4:17)

• “Rescue those being led away to death… If you say, ‘Behold, we did not know,’ does not He who weighs hearts consider it?” (Proverbs 24:11–12)

• “Remember those in chains as if you were bound with them.” (Hebrews 13:3)

Living the Difference

Choosing action over apathy preserves our testimony and honors God’s righteous standard. By stepping toward the wounded, using our voices for the voiceless, and keeping our hearts tender, we distance ourselves from Edom’s example and align with Christ’s call to active, sacrificial love.
