In what ways can we apply the Reubenites' commitment to our daily lives? Setting the Scene The tribes of Reuben and Gad saw that the land east of the Jordan was ideal for their flocks, so they asked Moses for it. Moses agreed only after they vowed to cross the Jordan first and fight beside their brothers until every tribe had its inheritance (Numbers 32:16–22). After the conquest, they returned east and “built up Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim” (Numbers 32:37). Their loyalty, sacrifice, and follow-through model a commitment we can live out today. Key Verse “ The Reubenites built up Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim.” (Numbers 32:37) Put Promise Before Personal Comfort • The Reubenites postponed settling their own families so Israel as a whole could take the land (Numbers 32:17–18). • Psalm 15:4 praises the one “who keeps his oath even when it hurts.” • Application: Keep your word—even when it costs time, convenience, or money. Let coworkers, neighbors, and relatives know that your “yes” always means yes (Matthew 5:37). Build Where God Places You • After fulfilling their oath, the Reubenites invested effort in the specific territory God granted them. • 1 Corinthians 7:17 urges each believer to “remain in the condition” where God has called him, serving faithfully there. • Application: Bloom where you’re planted—your workplace, neighborhood, dorm, or small town can become a place of spiritual construction when you pour energy into relationships and gospel witness. Leave a Tangible Legacy • “Built up” signals renovation and strengthening. Their cities would outlive them and bless future generations. • Proverbs 13:22: “A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children.” • Application: – Invest in your children’s faith through family devotions, church involvement, and personal example. – Prepare wills, budgets, and life plans that advance Kingdom purposes beyond your lifetime. – Mentor younger believers so the gospel foundation remains solid after you are gone (2 Timothy 2:2). Stand Shoulder to Shoulder With the Family of God • They refused to enjoy rest until every tribe had rest (Joshua 22:1–4). • Philippians 2:4: “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” • Application: – Share the workload at church; don’t assume “someone else will do it.” – Pray and give toward missions and struggling congregations. – Rejoice when another believer succeeds, knowing we win together. Steward God-Given Resources • The land east of the Jordan fit their livestock; they recognized and utilized that provision. • 1 Peter 4:10: “Each of you should use whatever gift he has received to serve others.” • Application: – Identify your talents, property, and opportunities as trusts from God. – Budget time and finances intentionally for Kingdom impact. – Maintain your home, farm, or business as a platform for hospitality and witness. Finish What You Start • Their promise was kept to the very end; only then did they settle and build. • Ecclesiastes 7:8: “The end of a matter is better than its beginning.” • Application: – Complete Bible reading plans, service projects, and personal goals you begin. – Close each day asking, “Did I finish today’s assignments God gave me?” Faith That Becomes Visible • Stones, walls, and gates made their commitment unmistakable to anyone passing by. • James 2:18: “I will show you my faith by my deeds.” • Application: – Let your calendar, bank statement, and social media show evidence of trust in Christ. – Display Scripture in your home, speak of God’s provision, and invite others into your life so they can see faith in action. Encouragement to Press On Galatians 6:9 reminds us: “Let us not grow weary in doing good, for in due time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Like the Reubenites, keep promises, build diligently, and trust God to turn ordinary obedience into an enduring legacy. |
