How can we excel in honoring others?
In what ways can we "outdo one another in honoring" fellow believers?

The Mandate: Romans 12:10

“Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Outdo yourselves in honoring one another.”

The Heart of Honor

• Honor treats every believer as God’s beloved child, purchased by Christ’s blood (1 Corinthians 6:20).

• It flows from genuine affection, not flattery—“Let love be without hypocrisy” (Romans 12:9).

• It is competitive in the best sense: striving to excel in showing esteem, not to receive it.

Looking to Christ’s Example

John 13:14—He, the Lord and Teacher, washed disciples’ feet.

Philippians 2:3-4—“In humility consider others more important than yourselves.”

1 Peter 2:17—“Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God.”

Christ sets the pattern: lowering Himself to lift others.

Practical Ways to Outdo One Another in Honoring

• Speak life-giving words

Proverbs 18:21; 1 Thessalonians 5:11—affirm gifts, celebrate victories, thank publicly and specifically.

• Listen with full attention

James 1:19—put devices down, maintain eye contact, value their story.

• Prefer others in decision-making

Romans 12:10 (ESV “prefer one another”); ask, “How can I serve your preference first?”

• Celebrate diverse gifts in the body

1 Corinthians 12:22-26—honor hidden, less visible members; invite them to share, applaud their contributions.

• Defend reputations

Proverbs 10:12—refuse gossip, speak truth in love when absent voices need protection.

• Share resources generously

Acts 4:34-35; Galatians 6:10—time, skills, finances, network connections.

• Serve quietly

Matthew 6:3-4—perform unnoticed acts (yard work, meals, childcare) that ease burdens.

• Publicly commend, privately correct

1 Timothy 5:1—esteem elders openly; if correction is needed, do it discreetly.

• Show tangible hospitality

Romans 12:13—open homes, create a welcoming table where believers feel treasured.

• Pray blessing, not competition

– 3 John 2—ask God to prosper and protect them; rejoice when He answers.

Guarding Against Obstacles

• Self-promotion—Philippians 2:21 warns many “seek their own interests.” Crucify that impulse daily.

• Comparison—Galatians 5:26: “Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.”

• Partiality—James 2:1-4 forbids favoritism; honor must extend across generations, ethnicities, and economic lines.

• Weariness—Galatians 6:9—keep sowing honor; harvest is coming.

Blessings That Follow Honoring Others

• Greater unity—Psalm 133:1-3; honored believers draw together in sweet fellowship.

• Powerful witness—John 13:35; the watching world sees Christ’s love embodied.

• Mutual encouragement—Romans 1:12; as we honor, we ourselves are strengthened.

• God’s exaltation—1 Samuel 2:30: “Those who honor Me I will honor.” Honoring His people honors Him, and He delights to reward it.

Let’s outdo one another this week and watch the Spirit turn a simple act of esteem into a harvest of joy and glory to God.
