How can we obey God's commands today?
In what ways can we show obedience to God's commands in our lives today?

The Call to Obedience in Genesis 17:24

“So Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised.” (Genesis 17:24)

God asked for a visible, costly act that marked Abraham as His covenant partner. Abraham complied that very day (see v. 23), proving that obedience is never limited by age, convenience, or comfort.

What Abraham’s Example Teaches Us

• Swift response — Abraham acted “on that very day.” Delay is disobedience dressed up in polite clothing.

• Whole-life surrender — the command touched his own body and every male in his household. Obedience is comprehensive, not selective.

• Public testimony — circumcision identified Abraham distinctly as belonging to God. Obedience today still sets believers apart.

• Trust over understanding — the patriarch did not ask for alternate plans; he trusted the God who gave the promise (Genesis 17:1-8).

• Scripture’s priority — “Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obedience to His voice?” (1 Samuel 15:22).

Practical Expressions of Obedience Today

• Live out Christ’s commands

– “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.” (John 14:15)

– Read, memorize, and apply the Word daily (James 1:22).

• Offer your whole self

– “Offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God.” (Romans 12:1)

– Honor God with sexuality, speech, work ethic, and recreational choices.

• Embrace covenant signs

– Baptism and the Lord’s Table proclaim union with Christ (Matthew 28:19; 1 Corinthians 11:26).

– Public identification encourages accountability and witness.

• Practice holiness in everyday decisions

– Honest business dealings, purity online, integrity in small tasks, faithful tithing, and generous giving reflect a circumcised heart.

• Serve the Body of Christ

– Use spiritual gifts for the good of others (1 Peter 4:10-11).

– Regular fellowship fuels obedience (Hebrews 10:24-25).

• Submit to God-given authorities

– Honor parents, church leaders, and civil officials insofar as their directives do not contradict God’s Word (Romans 13:1-7).

The Heart Behind the Action

• True obedience flows from internal transformation: “The LORD your God will circumcise your hearts… so that you may love Him.” (Deuteronomy 30:6)

• In Christ, believers experience “the circumcision performed by Christ and not by human hands.” (Colossians 2:11)

• Outward acts matter because they express an inward allegiance, but without a yielded heart they devolve into empty ritual.

Encouragement for Daily Follow-Through

• Start the day by surrendering plans to God; look for immediate opportunities to say “yes” to His promptings.

• Keep a short account with sin—confess quickly, repent decisively, receive cleansing (1 John 1:9).

• Surround yourself with believers who prize obedience; their example sharpens resolve (Proverbs 27:17).

• Remember that God supplies both the desire and the power to obey (Philippians 2:13).

• Rejoice in every step of obedience—large or small—knowing it pleases the Father, strengthens your faith, and shines light in a watching world.
