How can we serve each other locally?
In what ways can we "wash one another’s feet" in our community?

Setting the Scene

John 13 unfolds during the Passover meal. Jesus, fully aware of His divine authority and impending sacrifice, takes the role of a lowly servant and washes His disciples’ feet.

John 13:14-15

“So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example so that you should do as I have done for you.”

The Command

Washing feet was an act normally reserved for the lowest household servant. By doing it Himself, Jesus gave a literal demonstration and a lasting mandate: serve one another in humility, no task too menial, no person beneath loving care.

What Foot Washing Teaches Us

• Humility: We lay down pride and position (Philippians 2:3-5).

• Sacrifice: We expend time, resources, and comfort for others (Romans 12:1).

• Purity: Just as feet were cleansed of dirt, we help one another stay spiritually clean (Galatians 6:1).

• Equality: The ground is level at the foot of the cross (James 2:1).

Practical Ways to Wash Feet Today

• Meet tangible needs

– Cook meals for families in crisis

– Offer transportation to medical appointments

– Babysit so weary parents can rest

• Serve the overlooked

– Visit shut-ins and nursing-home residents

– Write letters to prisoners (Hebrews 13:3)

– Welcome immigrants and refugees with language help or job coaching

• Bear spiritual burdens

– Faithfully intercede in private prayer (Ephesians 6:18)

– Gently restore a brother caught in sin, guarding your own heart (Galatians 6:1-2)

– Share Scripture to encourage and correct (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

• Cultivate everyday kindness

– Offer a listening ear without rushing to fix

– Send an encouraging text or card

– Let someone else take the preferred seat, parking spot, or place in line

• Support church ministry

– Arrive early to set up chairs, clean, or make coffee

– Volunteer in children’s classes or sound booth

– Give generously so others can be reached with the gospel (2 Corinthians 9:6-8)

Keeping the Heart Posture

• Serve quietly, expecting nothing in return (Matthew 6:1-4).

• Remember Christ’s example: “The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve” (Matthew 20:28).

• Depend on the Holy Spirit for the love and power to continue (Galatians 5:22-23).

Encouragement from Other Scriptures

1 Peter 4:10: “Each of you should use whatever gift he has received to serve one another, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.”

Romans 12:10-13: Love one another with brotherly affection, outdo one another in showing honor, contribute to the needs of the saints, practice hospitality.

Hebrews 10:24: Spur one another on toward love and good deeds.

Closing Thoughts

When we stoop to serve—whether through a simple chore or a costly act of compassion—we mirror our Lord’s own hands and heart. Foot washing moves from basin and towel to daily life, transforming communities one humble act at a time.
