How can we support the unguided today?
In what ways can we provide support to those lacking guidance today?

Setting the Scene

Isaiah 51 pictures Jerusalem as a mother bereft of comforters, isolated in her suffering. Verse 18 pinpoints the crisis:

“Among all the sons she has borne there is none to guide her; among all the sons she has raised, there is none to take her hand.”

When people have “none to guide” or “take their hand,” God calls His people to step into that gap. Below are practical, biblical ways we can offer such support today.

Seeing the Need Clearly

• Lack of guidance produces confusion (Proverbs 29:18)

• Isolation deepens sorrow (Psalm 142:4)

• God’s heart is stirred when His people step in (Isaiah 58:10)

Offering Hands that Guide

1. Lead with Scripture

• Share God’s Word personally and regularly (2 Timothy 3:16–17).

• Open the Bible side-by-side, letting it speak into specific situations.

2. Model a God-centered life

• “Imitate me, as I imitate Christ.” (1 Corinthians 11:1)

• Demonstrate prayer, integrity, and faith in everyday decisions.

3. Provide steady presence

• “Bear one another’s burdens.” (Galatians 6:2)

• Consistent availability communicates the Father’s steadfast love.

4. Speak truth seasoned with grace

• “Faithful are the wounds of a friend.” (Proverbs 27:6)

• Correct lovingly, affirm generously, and always point back to Christ.

Taking the Hand of the Hurting

• Actively listen before advising (James 1:19).

• Offer practical help—meals, rides, child care—so counsel can be heard.

• Connect them to wider community: small groups, discipleship classes, trustworthy mentors (Hebrews 10:24-25).

Encouraging Forward Movement

• Celebrate incremental steps of obedience (Philippians 1:6).

• Remind them of God’s promises:

Psalm 32:8: “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go.”

Proverbs 3:5-6: “He will make your paths straight.”

• Pray with them for fresh filling of the Spirit, who alone guides into all truth (John 16:13).

Living Out the Call

Isaiah 51:18 laments the absence of guides; the Church answers that lament by:

• Embracing spiritual parenthood—raising sons and daughters in the faith.

• Standing in the gap for the vulnerable—foster care, mentoring, prison ministry.

• Cultivating a culture where no one walks alone.

As we take hands and shine Scriptural light, we reflect our Savior, who “will not leave you as orphans” (John 14:18).

How does Isaiah 51:18 connect with Proverbs 11:14 on the need for guidance?
