How can we uphold God's law today?
In what ways can we uphold God's law in our community today?

A covenant sealed with names (Nehemiah 10:3)

“Pashhur, Amariah, Malchijah,”.

Three obscure names, yet they stand as living proof that real people publicly pledged themselves to God’s law. Their signatures remind us that upholding Scripture is never abstract—it is personal, local, and communal.

Why their signatures matter to us

• God’s Word is concrete. Each name says, “I’m accountable.”

• Covenant faith is corporate. They could keep the law only by walking together.

• Individual commitment fuels community renewal (cf. Nehemiah 10:29).

Guiding principles for modern communities

1. Personal ownership

• Read and study the Word regularly (Deuteronomy 6:6–9).

• Speak it aloud in gatherings so everyone hears it together (1 Timothy 4:13).

2. Public identification

• Don’t hide biblical convictions; let neighbors know whom you serve (Matthew 5:16).

• Join a gospel-preaching church and commit to mutual accountability (Hebrews 10:24-25).

3. Corporate obedience

• Agree on shared practices that reflect God’s commands—honesty in business, sexual purity, care for the poor (Micah 6:8).

• Structure ministries so the whole body participates, not just leaders (1 Corinthians 12:4-7).

4. Stewardship and generosity

• Israel pledged tithes for temple service (Nehemiah 10:32-39); we invest resources in Christ’s work—time, talents, finances (2 Corinthians 9:6-8).

5. Sabbath rhythms

• The people promised to guard holy days (Nehemiah 10:31).

• Encourage rest, worship, and family time that signal trust in God rather than nonstop productivity (Mark 2:27).

Practical steps for today

• Host neighborhood Bible readings; rotate homes, share a meal, read a chapter aloud, discuss application.

• Form accountability bands of two or three who check in weekly on Scripture intake and obedience.

• Adopt a local service project—food pantry, crisis-pregnancy center, refugee support—so God’s justice becomes visible.

• Use social media to share Scripture artfully and graciously, avoiding quarrels (Colossians 4:5-6).

• Write out a family mission statement echoing Joshua 24:15: “As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD”. Post it where everyone sees it.

New-covenant motivation

Jesus said, “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments” (John 14:15). His atoning work empowers what Nehemiah’s signers could only anticipate. By the Spirit we fulfill the law’s righteous requirement (Romans 8:4), displaying God’s wisdom to the watching world (Ephesians 3:10).

Living out covenant faithfulness

Upholding God’s law in community today starts the same way it did in Nehemiah’s day: real people, known by name, stand together under Scripture’s authority and let that Word shape every sphere of life.

How does Nehemiah 10:3 connect with Deuteronomy's call to obey God's commandments?
