How does sin resist correction?
What does "crooked cannot be straightened" reveal about human inability to fix sin?

The verse in focus

“What is crooked cannot be straightened, and what is lacking cannot be counted.” — Ecclesiastes 1:15

What “crooked” pictures

• “Crooked” speaks of moral bentness—sin’s twist in every human heart (Psalm 51:5; Romans 3:23).

• It is not a cosmetic flaw but a structural warp, running through thoughts, desires, and deeds (Jeremiah 17:9).

• Solomon’s observation is literal: left to ourselves, the break is unrepairable; the deficit is unmeasurable.

Why we cannot straighten ourselves

• Sin is universal and comprehensive (Romans 3:10-12).

• We are spiritually dead, not merely sick (Ephesians 2:1). Dead people do not self-revive.

• God Himself has subjected the fallen world to futility (Ecclesiastes 7:13; Romans 8:20). What He has bent as judgment, we cannot unbend.

• Human effort—law-keeping, morals, religion—fails to address the root (Isaiah 64:6; Galatians 2:16).

God alone provides the straightening

• “Consider the work of God: Who can straighten what He has bent?” — Ecclesiastes 7:13. The implied answer: only God.

• He does so in Christ:

– “He was pierced for our transgressions… the punishment that brought us peace was on Him, and by His stripes we are healed.” — Isaiah 53:5

– “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” — Romans 5:8

• At conversion God gives a new heart, literally re-creating the person (2 Corinthians 5:17; Ezekiel 36:26-27).

• Sanctification continues the straightening: the Spirit aligns our character to Christ’s (Philippians 2:13).

Living in light of this truth

• Humility: acknowledge our helplessness instead of self-reformation projects.

• Dependence: run to the cross daily for cleansing and power (1 John 1:9).

• Gratitude: worship the God who straightens the un-straightenable.

• Hope: anticipate the day when every remaining warp in creation is forever set right (Revelation 21:5).
