How does worship respond to God's aid?
What role does worship play in responding to God's deliverance in Exodus 4:31?

The Text at the Center

“ ‘And the people believed; and when they heard that the LORD had attended to the Israelites and had seen their affliction, they bowed down and worshiped.’ ” (Exodus 4:31)

Setting the Scene

• The Israelites have groaned under Egyptian slavery for centuries.

• God commissions Moses and sends Aaron to speak, confirming His promise to deliver them (Exodus 3:7-10; 4:29-30).

• Upon hearing God’s plan, the people respond with two linked actions: belief and worship.

Belief and Bowing—A Two-Fold Response

1. “The people believed”

• Faith ignites when they recognize God’s personal involvement—He “had attended” to them.

Romans 10:17 reminds us, “So faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.” The spoken word from Moses and Aaron sparks hope.

2. “They bowed down and worshiped”

• Worship is the visible, tangible outworking of inward faith.

Psalm 95:6 echoes this posture: “Come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the LORD our Maker.”

Why Worship Follows Deliverance

• Gratitude: Deliverance stirs thankful hearts—“Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good” (Psalm 106:1).

• Recognition of God’s character: Bowing acknowledges His sovereignty and compassion.

• Humility: Worship positions the redeemed under the Redeemer’s authority (James 4:10).

• Testimony: Their collective bowing becomes a witness to one another that God is worthy (1 Chronicles 16:23-25).

Corporate Worship Strengthens Community

• The whole nation bows together—worship unites.

• Shared adoration solidifies identity as God’s covenant people (Exodus 12:27).

• It creates memory stones for future generations (Joshua 4:6-7).

Worship Sets the Stage for Obedience

• After worship, Israel prepares to follow Moses out of Egypt (Exodus 5-12).

• Worship fuels courage to confront Pharaoh and persevere through plagues.

Romans 12:1 links worship and obedience: “Present your bodies as a living sacrifice… this is your spiritual service of worship.”

A Pattern for Believers Today

• Recognize deliverance—chiefly through Christ’s cross and resurrection (Colossians 1:13-14).

• Let hearing the good news birth faith, then immediately express that faith in heartfelt, surrendered worship.

• Gather with fellow believers; corporate praise magnifies gratitude and steels resolve for obedience (Hebrews 10:24-25).

• Keep worship central. Like Israel, bowing before the Deliverer refreshes memory, renews faith, and readies us for every next step He appoints.
