How to aid those in crisis today?
How can we support others experiencing "oppression, calamity, and sorrow" today?

The Anchor Verse: God’s Comfort Commission

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.” (2 Corinthians 1:3–4)

Seeing God’s Heart for the Hurting

• God introduces Himself as “Father of compassion”—caring is His nature, not a hobby.

• He “comforts us in all our troubles,” proving no affliction is outside His reach.

• His comfort is never meant to stop with us; it is a pipeline, not a pond.

• Our own experiences of affliction become training grounds for ministry to others.

Practical Ways to Carry His Comfort Today

• Listen first—give undivided attention that communicates worth.

• Pray with and for them on the spot; invite God’s presence into their pain.

• Share Scripture that sustained you (Psalm 34:18; Isaiah 41:10).

• Meet tangible needs: meals, childcare, transportation, financial help.

• Advocate when injustice is involved; speak up where they cannot (Proverbs 31:8–9).

• Stay consistent—texts, visits, and calls after the initial crisis pass.

• Respect privacy but never let isolation win; gentle persistence matters.

• Connect them with specialized help (pastoral counseling, medical care, legal aid).

• Celebrate small victories to keep hope alive.

Living It Out in Community

• Small groups: adopt a family or individual in crisis for collective support.

• Church benevolence funds: give generously so leadership can respond quickly.

• Service rotations: schedule regular visits to hospitals, prisons, nursing homes (Hebrews 13:3; Matthew 25:35–36).

• Mentorship chains: pair seasoned sufferers with those newly afflicted for peer comfort.

• Prayer chains: surround the oppressed with 24-hour intercession coverage.

• Resource drives: clothing, food, school supplies for displaced or impoverished families.

Additional Scriptures for Strength and Direction

Galatians 6:2 – “Carry one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”

Romans 12:15 – “Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep.”

Isaiah 58:6–7 – true fasting breaks yokes and shelters the homeless.

James 1:27 – care for orphans and widows in their distress.

1 John 3:17–18 – love in action and truth, not words alone.

Closing Charge: Be the Channel

God’s comfort reached you so it could flow through you. Step toward the oppressed, the calamity-stricken, and the sorrowful. Carry their burdens, speak up for their rights, supply their needs, and keep pointing them to the Father of compassion—until their mourning turns to praise.

In what ways can we trust God during personal trials, as seen in Psalm 107:39?
