How to align with God's will today?
What steps can we take to align our lives with God's will today?

Listening to the Potter: Why Jeremiah 18 Matters

Jeremiah 18 pictures the LORD as the potter and Judah as malleable clay. When the clay stubbornly hardens, the potter must remake the vessel. Verse 16 shows the sobering result of refusing that reshaping: “to make their land a horror, a perpetual hissing. All who pass by will be appalled and shake their heads”. The same God still shapes lives today. He calls us to yield so we do not end up with the devastation Israel experienced.

Jeremiah 18:16—A Snapshot of the Consequences

• Horror – a life or community marred beyond recognition.

• Perpetual hissing – ongoing disgrace, not a momentary setback.

• Appalled onlookers – even outsiders notice when God’s people live out of step with Him (cf. Ezekiel 36:20).

These outcomes remind us that resisting God’s will damages both witness and wellbeing.

Recognize the Root Problem

The context (vv. 11–15) points out why judgment fell:

• Forgetting God (v. 15).

• Idolatry—“worthless idols” replacing wholehearted devotion.

• Abandoning “the ancient roads” for “new byways,” a picture of self-made morality.

Before taking any positive step we must admit where these same patterns creep into modern life—career, entertainment, relationships, even ministry.

Practical Steps to Align Our Lives with God’s Will

1. Submit to God’s Sovereign Hands

Romans 9:20-21—He is still the Potter; we are still the clay.

• Daily ask, “Where do You want to press, smooth, or remake me today?”

2. Return to the Ancient Paths

Jeremiah 6:16 “Ask for the ancient paths… walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls.”

• Re-center on historic, biblical truths instead of trending opinions.

3. Eliminate Modern Idols

1 John 5:21 “Keep yourselves from idols.”

• Identify anything absorbing affection or trust that belongs to God—finances, technology, approval. Replace them with worship and obedience.

4. Embrace Wholehearted Repentance

2 Chronicles 7:14—humble, pray, seek His face, and turn.

• Repentance is not merely apology; it is a decisive change in direction.

5. Feed on Scripture Daily

Psalm 119:105—His word is a lamp and light.

• Move beyond snippets; read, meditate, memorize, and apply.

6. Walk by the Spirit

Galatians 5:16—“Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.”

• Cultivate sensitivity through prayer, worship, and instant obedience to promptings aligned with Scripture.

7. Practice Obedient Action

James 1:22—“Be doers of the word, and not hearers only.”

• Start with what you already know: forgive, serve, speak truth, act justly.

8. Seek Fellowship and Accountability

Hebrews 10:24-25—encourage one another daily.

• Invite trusted believers to point out blind spots before they harden.

9. Keep an Eternal Perspective

Colossians 3:2—“Set your minds on things above.”

• Remember future reward and final judgment; they steady present choices.

Walking the Ancient Paths Today

• Schedule intentional time each week to examine life under these steps.

• Celebrate evidence of God’s reshaping—transformed attitudes, restored relationships, new ministry opportunities.

• When setbacks occur, return immediately to the Potter; soft clay is much easier to mold than hardened clay.

Encouragement for the Journey

God’s warning in Jeremiah 18:16 is sobering, yet His heart is to bless, not to destroy. Yielding to His hands leads to useful, honorable vessels (2 Timothy 2:21). The sooner we align with His will, the sooner His beauty replaces the horror sin creates, and others will marvel—this time not in shock, but in praise of what the Master Potter can do.

How can we ensure our actions don't lead to 'hissing' and 'everlasting scorn'?
