How to avoid being a spiritual trap?
What practical steps help us avoid being a "trap" for others spiritually?

Setting the Scene—Romans 14:13

“Therefore let us stop judging one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother.”

What Does It Mean to Be a “Trap”?

• “Stumbling block” translates the Greek skándalon—originally a bait-stick in an animal trap.

• Spiritually, it is any attitude, word, or action that lures another believer into sin, doubt, or despair (cf. Matthew 18:6-7; Luke 17:1).

• Paul grounds this warning in the Spirit-given authority of Scripture; the command carries divine weight.

Practical Steps to Keep from Becoming a Spiritual Trap

• Examine My Own Heart

– Daily ask the Spirit to reveal any hidden pride or judgment (Psalm 139:23-24).

– Remember I will give an account of myself to God (Romans 14:12).

• Choose Love over Liberty

– Freedom is real, but love limits freedom for another’s good (1 Corinthians 10:23-24).

– If a doubtful practice wounds a weaker conscience, I gladly abstain (1 Corinthians 8:9-13).

• Watch My Words

– Refuse gossip, sarcasm, or humor that belittles holy things (Ephesians 4:29).

– Speak truth seasoned with grace, aiming to build up (Colossians 4:6).

• Model Visible Integrity

– Consistent choices in private protect brothers and sisters who are watching (Philippians 4:8-9).

– Quick repentance when I fail shows others how to run to Christ, not away from Him (1 John 1:9).

• Seek Mutual Edification

– Pursue what leads to peace and mutual building up (Romans 14:19).

– Invite accountability; give trusted believers permission to point out blind spots (Proverbs 27:17).

• Prioritize the Weaker Brother

– Ask, “Will this help or hinder someone newer or weaker in the faith?” (1 Corinthians 8:12).

– Remember that Christ died for that brother or sister; their welfare outweighs my preference (Romans 14:15).

• Cultivate Humble Perspective

– Value others above myself (Philippians 2:3-4).

– Keep eternity in view; rewards are promised to those who build others up, not tear them down (1 Corinthians 3:12-15).

Living It Out Today

The Word calls each believer to be a stepping-stone, never a snare. By surrendering liberties to love, guarding our speech, and walking humbly in view of Christ’s return, we help fellow travelers stay clear of spiritual traps and press on toward maturity together.
