How to avoid misjudging others?
What steps can we take to ensure we don't misjudge others, as in Acts 21:29?

The Trap of Assumption: Acts 21:29

“For they had previously seen Trophimus the Ephesian in the city with Paul and assumed that Paul had brought him into the temple.”

The crowd leapt from limited observation to deadly accusation, proving how swiftly assumptions can ignite injustice.

Why We Misjudge

• Limited information

• Pre-existing prejudice

• Group pressure and emotion

• Pride that values being right over finding truth

Consequences of Misjudging

• Injustice toward a brother or sister

• Loss of testimony before unbelievers

• Division within the body of Christ

• Grieving the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:30)

Step 1: Slow Down and Verify the Facts

• “He who answers before he hears—it is folly and disgrace to him.” (Proverbs 18:13)

• Refuse action until firsthand evidence is clear.

• Seek multiple witnesses and measure every report against Scripture.

Step 2: Give the Benefit of Love

• “Love… bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” (1 Corinthians 13:4-7)

• Assume the best motives until proven otherwise.

• Speak of others as you would have them speak of you (Matthew 7:12).

Step 3: Check Motives with Humility

• “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” (James 4:6)

• Invite the Lord to search your own heart before evaluating anyone else (Psalm 139:23-24).

• Acknowledge personal bias and repent of it.

Step 4: Guard Against Prejudice

• “There is neither Jew nor Greek… for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” (Galatians 3:28)

• Reject snap judgments based on ethnicity, status, or background.

• Celebrate the unity Christ purchased.

Step 5: Remember Who the Judge Is

• “We will all stand before God’s judgment seat.” (Romans 14:10-12)

• “There is only one Lawgiver and Judge.” (James 4:12)

• God alone sees the heart; we remain accountable for our words and attitudes.

Step 6: Practice Patient Listening

• “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger.” (James 1:19)

• Listening honors the image of God in the other person.

• Silence often prevents multiplying false words.

Step 7: Seek Reconciliation Early

• “If your brother sins against you, go and confront him privately.” (Matthew 18:15)

• Private, gentle conversation clears misunderstandings.

• “Be kind and tenderhearted… forgiving each other.” (Ephesians 4:32)

Step 8: Evaluate by Righteous Judgment, Not Appearance

• “Stop judging by outward appearances, and start judging justly.” (John 7:24)

• Examine actions and fruit through the lens of Scripture, not personal preference.

• Reject gossip and half-truths.

A Daily Walk of Discernment and Grace

• Begin each day remembering the mercy God extends to you.

• Decide in advance to think the best of others until facts dictate otherwise.

• Use words that build up, never careless accusations.

• When correction is required, wrap it in gentleness (Galatians 6:1).

• Keep Acts 21:29 in mind—assumption can destroy, but Spirit-led discernment preserves unity and exalts Christ.
