How can we avoid placing "an obstacle in anyone’s way" in our ministry? Setting the Foundation: Understanding 2 Corinthians 6:3 “We put no obstacle in anyone’s way, so that no one can discredit our ministry.” (2 Corinthians 6:3) Paul’s aim is simple: nothing in his life or work should trip others up or cloud the beauty of the gospel. Our goal is the same. Guarding Personal Conduct • Live above reproach. Titus 2:7-8—“In everything, show yourself to be an example by doing good works… so that those who oppose you will be ashamed.” • Choose holiness over liberty. 1 Peter 1:15—“But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do.” • Mind the small things; they often become the biggest stumbling blocks—language, habits, punctuality, financial integrity. Speaking with Grace and Clarity • Colossians 4:6—“Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt.” • Avoid “Christian jargon” that confuses newcomers; explain terms carefully. • Refuse gossip and slander; they erode trust faster than any sermon can rebuild it. Practicing Sensitivity to Conscience • Romans 14:13—“Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in your brother’s way.” • Limit freedoms if they unsettle weaker believers (food, drink, entertainment). • Ask, “Will this choice point others to Christ or to my personal preferences?” Serving with Sacrificial Love • 1 Corinthians 9:19-22—Paul adapts to different groups “so that I might win the weak.” • Prioritize people over programs; relationships over routines. • Be willing to be inconvenienced—staying late, listening long, sharing resources. Maintaining Transparency and Accountability • 2 Corinthians 8:21—“For we are taking pains to do what is right, not only in the eyes of the Lord but also in the eyes of men.” • Operate finances openly; publish reports, invite oversight. • Welcome feedback; correct course quickly when concerns arise. Staying Anchored in the Gospel • Philippians 1:27—“Conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.” • Keep Jesus—not personalities, trends, or politics—at the center of every message and ministry effort. • Regularly rehearse the cross and resurrection; nothing else has the power to save or to keep us from becoming the obstacle ourselves. Putting It All Together When our character, words, freedoms, service, and focus line up with the gospel, obstacles disappear and the path to Christ is clear. |
