In what ways can we claim our "hill country" in today's world? Setting the Scene “Now give me this hill country that the LORD promised me on that day” (Joshua 14:12). Forty-five years after spying out Canaan, Caleb—at eighty-five—still burns with faith to seize the land God guaranteed. His request is bold, specific, and grounded in an unshakable trust that the Lord’s promises never expire. What the “Hill Country” Signifies Today • A God-given assignment or calling that stretches us • Areas of influence where Christ is not yet honored • Personal battles—sin patterns, fears, past wounds—that must be conquered • Kingdom opportunities requiring perseverance and courage • Dreams the Spirit planted long ago that have lain dormant How to Claim Your Hill Country 1. Anchor yourself in God’s unchanging promise – “The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever” (Isaiah 40:8). – Like Caleb, rehearse what God has already said; His word defines reality. 2. Cultivate a different spirit – Numbers 14:24: “But because My servant Caleb has a different spirit and has followed Me wholeheartedly…” – Wholehearted devotion crowds out compromise and fuels endurance. 3. Refuse to be limited by age, season, or circumstance – Caleb’s strength at eighty-five mirrors Isaiah 46:4: “Even to your old age and gray hairs I will carry you; I have made you, and I will bear you.” – The Lord equips you precisely for the territory He assigns. 4. Face the giants head-on – Caleb’s hill country housed the Anakim. Your “giants” may be cultural opposition, entrenched habits, or daunting objectives. – Romans 8:37: “In all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.” 5. Act in faith, not presumption – Joshua granted Caleb Hebron, but Caleb still had to march up the slopes and fight. – James 2:17: “Faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.” – Step where God has spoken, trusting Him for the outcome. 6. Rely on covenant community – Joshua’s partnership with Caleb shows that claiming territory is rarely solo. – Hebrews 10:24–25 urges us to “spur one another on toward love and good deeds… encouraging one another.” Encouragement from Parallel Passages • Ephesians 1:11: “In Him we were also chosen… according to the plan of Him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of His will.” Your inheritance is secure. • 2 Timothy 1:6: “Fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you.” Rekindle dormant callings. • Philippians 3:13–14: “Forgetting what is behind and reaching forward to what is ahead, I press on toward the goal…” Pressing on is how ground is taken. Living the Victory Daily • Start each day declaring specific promises tied to your “hill country.” • Reject discouragement quickly—Caleb waited four and a half decades without surrendering hope. • Celebrate incremental wins; every foothold is evidence the Lord fights for you. • Pass the legacy. After Hebron was secured, it became a heritage for Caleb’s descendants (Joshua 14:14). Your obedience pioneers blessings for generations. The same God who fortified Caleb still calls His people to climb, conquer, and consecrate new ground. Rise up and claim your hill country. |
