How to counter false teachings?
What actions should we take against false teachings, inspired by Jeremiah 28:16?

Setting the Stage—Jeremiah 28:16 in Context

Jeremiah confronts the prophet Hananiah, who has been soothing Judah with lies about an imminent end to Babylonian domination. God responds:

“Therefore, this is what the LORD says: ‘I am about to remove you from the face of the earth. This very year you will die, because you have preached rebellion against the LORD.’” (Jeremiah 28:16)

The Lord’s swift, literal judgment highlights how seriously He views false teaching. While we are not called to pronounce physical death, we are commanded to take decisive, Scripture-shaped action whenever error threatens God’s people.

Why False Teaching Demands Action

• It distorts God’s character and gospel (Galatians 1:8-9).

• It destroys spiritual health—“their message will spread like gangrene” (2 Timothy 2:17).

• It divides Christ’s body (Romans 16:17-18).

Because Scripture is accurate and authoritative, we cannot remain neutral.

Action Step 1: Stay Alert and Discern

• Test every message against the written Word (Acts 17:11).

• Watch the fruit—“By their fruit you will recognize them” (Matthew 7:15-20).

• Rely on the Spirit’s guidance (1 John 2:27).

Action Step 2: Confront with Truth

• Speak up immediately—“Preach the word… correct, rebuke, and encourage” (2 Timothy 4:2).

• Use Scripture as the standard, not personal opinion (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

• Keep the tone firm yet loving—“speaking the truth in love” (Ephesians 4:15).

Action Step 3: Protect the Flock

• Warn others—“Beware of false prophets” (Matthew 7:15).

• Provide sound teaching that equips believers to discern (Ephesians 4:11-14).

• Assign mature leaders to guard doctrine (Titus 1:9).

Action Step 4: Separate if Necessary

• “Turn away from them” (Romans 16:17).

• “Reject a divisive man after a first and second admonition” (Titus 3:10-11).

• Do not offer a platform—“do not receive him into your home or welcome him” (2 John 10-11).

Action Step 5: Hold Fast to Sound Doctrine

• Remain anchored in the apostles’ teaching (Acts 2:42).

• Memorize and meditate on Scripture (Psalm 119:11).

• Encourage one another daily so none are “hardened by the deceitfulness of sin” (Hebrews 3:13).

A Call to Steadfast Courage

God’s judgment on Hananiah reminds us that error is never harmless. By staying alert, confronting deception, protecting the flock, separating when necessary, and clinging to truth, we honor the Lord who gave us His inerrant Word.
