How to emulate James, Cephas, John?
How can we apply the example of James, Cephas, and John in our lives?

The Moment in Galatians 2:9

“ ‘And recognizing the grace that had been given to me, James, Cephas, and John, those reputed to be pillars, gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship so that we might go to the Gentiles, and they to the circumcised.’ ”

What We Learn from These Three Pillars

• Recognize God-given grace in others

  – They saw Paul’s calling as literal, Spirit-given reality (Acts 9:15; 1 Corinthians 15:10).

• Extend genuine fellowship

  – A public handshake affirmed unity (Psalm 133:1; John 17:21).

• Respect diverse callings while guarding one gospel

  – Different fields—same message (1 Corinthians 3:6-9).

• Stand firm like “pillars”

  – Steadfastness anchors the church (1 Timothy 3:15).

• Prioritize mission over personal preference

  – They surrendered prominence in Jerusalem so Gentiles could hear (Romans 15:20).

Living This Out Today

1. Celebrate grace you see in a brother or sister; say it out loud.

2. Offer the “right hand of fellowship”: invite, include, encourage.

3. Clarify your specific assignment—then cheer on others in theirs.

4. Hold fast to scripture’s accuracy; refuse to dilute the gospel.

5. Provide stability: be the person others can lean on in truth and love.

Supporting Verses to Anchor These Steps

Acts 11:23—Barnabas “rejoiced and encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord.”

Ephesians 4:16—“From Him the whole body…grows and builds itself up in love.”

2 Timothy 2:2—“Entrust to faithful men who will be qualified to teach others also.”

Hebrews 10:24—“Let us consider how to spur one another on to love and good works.”
