How to find God in tough times?
In what ways can you seek God's presence during life's overwhelming moments?

The Cry of the Deep—Psalm 42:7

“Deep calls to deep in the roar of Your waterfalls; all Your breakers and waves have swept over me.”

Overwhelmed Yet Drawn In

• The psalmist pictures life’s troubles as pounding waterfalls and relentless waves.

• Even as he feels submerged, he recognizes that God’s own currents are what surround him—meaning God is present, not absent, in the surge.

Practical Ways to Seek God’s Nearness When the Waves Rise

1. Saturate Your Mind with His Word

• Read aloud passages of assurance:

Psalm 46:1 “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”

Isaiah 43:2 “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you.”

• Memorize short, sturdy verses; repeat them when anxiety crashes in (Philippians 4:6–7).

2. Sing Truth into the Storm

Psalm 42:8 shows the psalmist doing this: “The LORD commands His loving devotion by day, and at night His song is with me.”

• Hymns and worship songs turn doctrine into devotion, lifting perspective from the waves to the Wave-Calmer (Mark 4:39).

3. Pour Out Your Heart Honestly

Psalm 62:8 invites: “Pour out your hearts before Him; God is our refuge.”

• Raw confession aligns feelings with reality—God welcomes the unfiltered cry (“Deep calls to deep”).

4. Recall His Past Faithfulness

Psalm 77:11-12 models remembering “the deeds of the LORD.”

• Keep a journal of answered prayers; reviewing it builds fresh confidence when new breakers roll in.

5. Seek Community, Not Isolation

Hebrews 10:24-25 urges meeting together for encouragement.

• Fellow believers remind you of truth when your own voice falters (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10).

6. Practice Stillness Before Acting

Psalm 46:10 “Be still, and know that I am God.”

• Carve out undistracted moments—silence allows His whisper to cut through the roar.

7. Cast Every Specific Care on Him

1 Peter 5:7 commands, “Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.”

• Name each concern aloud; picture handing it to Christ. The act reinforces trust in His sufficiency.

Hope Anchored Beyond the Waves

Psalm 42 ends with the psalmist preaching to himself: “Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him” (v. 11).

• The breakers may keep coming, but the soul that clings to God’s unchanging Word and presence emerges strengthened, knowing the deep calls—and God answers.
