What steps can we take to identify and support spiritual leaders among us? Setting the Scene Ezra 8:15 paints a vivid picture: “I assembled them at the canal that runs to Ahava, and we camped there three days. I searched among the people and priests for Levites, but I found none there.” Ezra has a willing crowd ready to travel, but no Levites—no officially recognized spiritual leaders—to guide worship in Jerusalem. From his deliberate actions we can draw a simple, practical framework for identifying and supporting the spiritual leaders God provides today. Step 1: Pause and Take Inventory • Ezra “assembled” the people and then “camped there three days.” • He didn’t rush ahead; he assessed who was present and who was missing. • Application: Before appointing leaders, gather the congregation, ministry team, or family and honestly evaluate current gifts and gaps (Romans 12:4–6). Step 2: Measure Against God’s Standards • Ezra specifically looked for Levites because God’s Word assigned them the role (Numbers 3:5–10). • Scripture, not personal preference, defined leadership qualifications. • Application: Compare potential leaders with the requirements in 1 Timothy 3:1-13 and Titus 1:5-9. Character always outweighs charisma. Step 3: Make an Intentional Search • When none were found, Ezra didn’t settle. The next verses show him sending trusted men to recruit Levites (Ezra 8:16-17). • Application: Pray, network, and even “send for” people who meet biblical standards. Acts 6:3 echoes this: “Therefore, brothers, select from among you seven men confirmed to be full of the Spirit and wisdom…”. Step 4: Recognize God’s Provision and Affirm the Called • “Because the gracious hand of our God was on us, they brought us Sherebiah… and his sons and brothers” (Ezra 8:18). • Ezra publicly acknowledged God’s hand in providing leaders. • Application: Celebrate when God raises up servants. Affirm them verbally and publicly (Philippians 2:29). Step 5: Equip with Practical Support • Ezra later entrusted the Levites with temple treasures (Ezra 8:24-30), giving them both responsibility and resources. • Application: Provide training, tools, finances, and clear authority so leaders can serve effectively (Ephesians 4:11-12). Step 6: Cover Them with Prayer and Fasting • “Then I proclaimed a fast there… so that we might humble ourselves before our God” (Ezra 8:21). • Application: Intercede regularly for leaders’ protection and wisdom. Acts 13:3 shows the early church doing the same before sending Barnabas and Saul. Step 7: Trust Them to the Mission and Celebrate the Outcome • After the journey, “we came to Jerusalem, and there we rested three days” (Ezra 8:32). The entrusted Levites completed their task. • Application: Release leaders to serve (Luke 10:1) and then celebrate God’s faithfulness when the work is done (3 John 1:3-4). By pausing to assess, searching deliberately, measuring by Scripture, affirming, equipping, praying, and releasing, we follow Ezra’s pattern and faithfully identify and support the spiritual leaders God places among us. |
