How to find truth in spiritual journey?
How can we discern truth from deception in our spiritual walk today?

Setting the Scene: Joshua 9:3

“But the people of Gibeon, having heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai,” (Joshua 9:3)

The Gibeonites’ first move was information management. They heard, analyzed, and planned an elaborate ruse to save themselves. Israel, fresh from victory, faced a test they did not see coming—a carefully crafted deception wrapped in flattery and religious language.

Recognizing Deception Then and Now

• Deceivers often study God’s people before striking.

• They mix truth with half-truths, flattering speech, and forged evidence (old sacks, worn sandals, moldy bread).

• Spiritual victories can make us complacent, presuming the next decision will be easy.

Principles for Discernment

1. Walk in continual dependence on the Lord, not on impressions alone.

• “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)

2. Seek fresh guidance rather than relying on yesterday’s success.

• Israel quizzed the Gibeonites but “did not seek the counsel of the LORD” (Joshua 9:14).

3. Test every spirit and every story.

• “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits…” (1 John 4:1)

4. Measure words against the unchanging standard of Scripture.

• “If you continue in My word… you will know the truth.” (John 8:31-32)

5. Evaluate fruit, not appearances.

• “By their fruit you will recognize them.” (Matthew 7:15-16)

6. Train discernment through consistent practice.

• “By constant use [the mature] have trained their senses to distinguish good from evil.” (Hebrews 5:14)

Supporting Scripture Snapshots

James 1:5 — Ask God for wisdom; He gives generously.

Psalm 119:105 — The Word is a lamp and light, exposing hidden traps.

Ephesians 6:11-18 — Put on the full armor; deception is part of the enemy’s scheme.

Daily Habits That Sharpen Discernment

• Start each decision with deliberate prayer for guidance.

• Compare every teaching, prophecy, or “fresh revelation” with the whole counsel of Scripture.

• Invite mature believers to speak into major choices; multiple witnesses confirm truth (Proverbs 11:14).

• Keep short accounts with God—confessed sin clears spiritual eyesight.

• Cultivate scriptural literacy through daily reading, memorization, and meditation.

• Notice patterns: if someone’s claims require secrecy, rush, or isolation, pause. Truth welcomes light and time.

Encouragement for the Journey

Deception did not derail God’s ultimate purpose for Israel, and it will not thwart His plan for those who stay near His Word, lean into His wisdom, and allow His Spirit to guide each step. Walk alert, stay humble, and rejoice that the Author of truth delights to direct His children.
