How to foster unity in church today?
How can we apply the importance of unity in our church communities today?

Setting the Scene

1 Kings 12:19 reports, “So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day.”

• The united kingdom splits after Solomon—ten tribes follow Jeroboam, two stay with Rehoboam.

• A single act of pride, harshness, and failure to listen fractures God’s people for generations.

• The verse reminds us that division, once unleashed, can linger “to this day,” unless God’s people pursue reconciliation.

The Cost of Division

• Worship is diluted: Jeroboam sets up golden calves (1 Kings 12:28–30).

• Witness is damaged: surrounding nations see God’s people fighting, not flourishing.

• Generations inherit distrust: children grow up assuming separation is normal.

What Unity Looks Like in Christ

Psalm 133:1—“Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in harmony!”

John 17:21—Jesus prays “that all of them may be one … so that the world may believe.”

1 Corinthians 1:10—Paul urges “no divisions… united in mind and conviction.”

Ephesians 4:3—“with diligence to preserve the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.”

Colossians 3:14—“Over all these virtues put on love, which is the bond of perfect unity.”

Unity is not uniformity; it is shared allegiance to the Lord, expressed through love, humility, and truth.

Practical Steps for Our Local Church

Relationship-building

• Share meals, testimonies, and everyday life; proximity nurtures empathy.

• Pair long-time members with newer believers for mutual encouragement.

Communication

• Speak truth in love (Ephesians 4:15).

• Listen first, answer gently (Proverbs 15:1).

Humility in leadership

• Leaders model servant hearts (Mark 10:45).

• Decisions are bathed in Scripture and collective prayer, not personal agendas.

Conflict resolution

• Go privately and promptly (Matthew 18:15).

• Aim for restoration, not winning an argument (Galatians 6:1).

Shared mission

• Keep the gospel central—one Lord, one faith, one baptism (Ephesians 4:5).

• Serve the community together: outreach projects unite hearts around a common cause.

Regular reminders

• Celebrate communion frequently; the Table proclaims one body (1 Corinthians 10:16–17).

• Memorize unity passages as a congregation.

Encouraging Scriptures to Anchor Our Hearts

Romans 12:16—“Live in harmony with one another.”

Philippians 2:2—“being united in spirit and purpose.”

Hebrews 12:14—“Pursue peace with everyone.”

1 Peter 3:8—“All of you be like-minded, sympathetic, loving, compassionate, and humble.”

Closing Reflection

Israel’s split in 1 Kings 12 began with hardness of heart. In Christ we have a softer, Spirit-filled way. When we value relationship over pride, servant leadership over control, and the gospel over personal preference, the church offers the world a powerful testimony: divided no longer, but one new people in Him.

How does this division relate to Jesus' teachings on unity in John 17?
