How can we ensure our hearts are fully devoted to God today? The Warning in Jehoshaphat’s Story 2 Chronicles 20:33 records: “The high places, however, were not removed, and the people still had not set their hearts on the God of their fathers.” Jehoshaphat loved the LORD, yet unfinished business in the nation allowed lingering idolatry. The verse exposes two dangers: • Visible reforms without inward surrender • Worship of God alongside toleration of rival “high places” Why a Fully Devoted Heart Matters • Proverbs 4:23 – “Guard your heart with all diligence, for from it flow springs of life.” • Deuteronomy 6:5 – Whole-hearted love is the first command. • Matthew 6:24 – A divided heart eventually chooses one master. Identifying Today’s High Places • Career, comfort, or reputation elevated above obedience • Entertainment and screens shaping affections more than Scripture • Secret sins quietly stealing loyalty (Ephesians 5:11) • Traditions or relationships cherished over Christ (Luke 14:26) Pathways to a Set Heart 1. Remove every idol – 1 John 5:21; 2 Corinthians 10:5 – Honest inventory, decisive action, even when costly. 2. Saturate the mind with God’s Word – Deuteronomy 6:6-9; Colossians 3:16 – Read, memorize, meditate, and speak Scripture throughout the day. 3. Prioritize gathered worship and fellowship – Corporate praise and mutual encouragement keep hearts warm toward God. 4. Cultivate daily personal communion – Set, protected times for prayer, listening, and praise. 5. Walk in immediate obedience – Small acts of faithfulness train the heart for larger ones. 6. Practice continual repentance – Quick confession keeps the conscience tender. 7. Offer life as living sacrifice – Serve, give, and speak for Christ, letting devotion translate into action. Safeguarding Devotion for the Long Haul • Accountability with mature believers (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10) • Rhythms of rest and sabbath to prevent spiritual drift (Exodus 20:8-11) • Regular remembrance of God’s faithfulness—journaling, testimonies, celebrating the Lord’s Supper (Joshua 4:6-7; 1 Corinthians 11:26) Living Wholeheartedly Today By tearing down modern high places, immersing ourselves in Scripture, and choosing consistent obedience, we keep our hearts fully devoted. The God of Jehoshaphat remains eager to strengthen those “whose hearts are fully committed to Him” (2 Chronicles 16:9). |
