How to gain support during a crisis?
What steps can we take to gather support in times of crisis?

Setting the Scene—Judges 10:17

“Then the Ammonites were summoned and camped in Gilead, and the Israelites assembled and camped at Mizpah.”

Step 1: Acknowledge the Threat Openly

• Israel “assembled” because danger was real and immediate.

• Silence isolates; naming the crisis invites help (cf. Psalm 142:2).

Step 2: Move Toward Each Other, Not Away

• They “camped” together—proximity builds courage.

Hebrews 10:24-25 reminds us to “encourage one another… assembling together.”

Step 3: Choose a Strategic Gathering Place

• Mizpah (“watchtower”) offered visibility and protection.

• Today: a living room, church hall, or online meeting—any space that fosters watchfulness and unity.

Proverbs 27:12: “A prudent man sees danger and hides himself.” Pick the place that best fortifies the group.

Step 4: Invite and Recognize God-Fearing Leadership

• The next verse shows Israel seeking a commander (Judges 10:18).

• Leaders rally hearts; followers supply strength (Exodus 17:11-13).

• Pray for—and publicly affirm—those willing to stand at the front.

Step 5: Seek the Lord Before Strategy

• Though not recorded until 11:11, Jephthah “spoke all his words before the LORD at Mizpah.”

2 Chronicles 20:4: “The people of Judah gathered to seek help from the LORD.”

• Aligning under God’s authority unites motives and multiplies power.

Step 6: Share the Load Practically

Galatians 6:2: “Carry one another’s burdens.”

• Divide tasks:

– Intercessors: constant prayer.

– Providers: meals, finances, logistics.

– Encouragers: Scripture, songs, presence.

Step 7: Keep Communication Flowing

• Israel’s tribes knew where to report—Mizpah became the hub.

• Clear channels—texts, calls, brief in-person updates—prevent confusion (1 Corinthians 14:8).

Step 8: Remember the Wider Family of Faith

Judges 11:7 hints Jephthah had felt excluded; yet crisis opened doors for reconciliation.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12: “Two are better than one… a cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”

• Invite those previously distant; unity glorifies God and strengthens all.

Putting It All Together

1. Name the crisis.

2. Gather physically or virtually.

3. Select a wise meeting point.

4. Affirm godly leadership.

5. Seek the Lord first.

6. Share burdens in practical ways.

7. Communicate clearly.

8. Widen the circle of unity.

Following Israel’s example at Mizpah, these steps help us rally support, fortify faith, and face any crisis together under God’s unchanging Word.
