How to honor spiritual leaders?
How should we show respect to spiritual leaders, inspired by Acts 10:25?

Setting the Scene

“As Peter was about to enter, Cornelius met him and fell at his feet in reverence.” (Acts 10:25)

Cornelius’ instinctive response—falling at Peter’s feet—shows a sincere desire to honor a man of God. Peter quickly corrects the excess (v. 26), yet the moment teaches timeless lessons about the respect owed to those who shepherd God’s people.

Why Respect Matters

• God delegates authority: “Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls…” (Hebrews 13:17).

• Honor reflects gratitude: “Now we ask you, brothers, to acknowledge those who labor among you… and esteem them very highly in love because of their work.” (1 Thessalonians 5:12-13).

• Respect protects unity: honoring leaders helps stave off grumbling, factionalism, and discouragement.

Respect without Idolatry

Cornelius bowed; Peter raised him up. The balance lies between honor and worship:

• Leaders are servants, not saviors (1 Peter 5:2-3).

• Christ alone receives ultimate allegiance (Revelation 19:10).

• Healthy respect keeps leaders human while valuing their God-given role.

Practical Ways to Show Honor

• Speak well of them—publicly and privately. “Pay… respect to whom respect is due, honor to whom honor is due.” (Romans 13:7).

• Pray consistently for wisdom, purity, courage (Ephesians 6:19).

• Support their material needs. “The elders who lead well are worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching.” (1 Timothy 5:17).

• Obey Scripture-based guidance promptly; delay often equals disobedience (James 1:22).

• Offer encouragement after sermons or visits—specific words of how God used their ministry.

Guarding Against Extremes

• Avoid celebrity culture: base respect on calling and character, not charisma.

• Discern biblically; respect does not silence legitimate accountability (Galatians 2:11-14).

• Reject cynicism: past failures of some do not justify withholding honor from all.

Encouragement for Leaders

When believers practice biblical respect, leaders can focus on prayer and the ministry of the Word (Acts 6:4). Mutual love flourishes, Christ is exalted, and the church advances with joy and order.
