How to identify false teachings in church?
What steps can we take to discern false teachings in our church community?

Setting the Scene in Pergamum

“ ‘But I have a few things against you: You have some there who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to place a stumbling block before the Israelites, to eat food sacrificed to idols, and to commit sexual immorality.’ ” (Revelation 2:14)

Pergamum’s church loved Christ, yet tolerated voices that quietly pulled believers into idolatry and immorality. The Lord’s rebuke shows that false teaching is rarely loud at first—it works like a hidden wedge, separating hearts from wholehearted obedience.

Why False Teaching Sneaks In

• It often borrows biblical language while bending meaning.

• It promises cultural acceptance or “deeper” spirituality without costly obedience.

• It preys on gaps in our knowledge of Scripture, just as Balaam exploited Israel’s vulnerabilities (Numbers 25; 31:16).

Because every word of Scripture is God-breathed and reliable, anything contradicting it—no matter how persuasive—must be rejected.

Practical Steps for Discernment

1. Stay rooted in the whole counsel of God.

– Read, study, and memorize so that counterfeit ideas stand out immediately.

2. Compare every teaching with clear biblical statements.

– Does it line up with direct commandments and the gospel’s core?

3. Watch the fruit.

– Sound doctrine produces holiness, humility, and love (Matthew 7:15-20).

4. Test the source.

– Is the teacher accountable, transparent, and submissive to Scripture?

5. Listen for the gospel’s central note.

– If Christ’s atoning death and bodily resurrection are minimized, something is wrong (1 Corinthians 15:3-4).

6. Use the community safeguard.

– Discuss concerns with mature believers and elders; error thrives in isolation.

7. Act quickly but biblically.

– Confront with truth in love (Ephesians 4:15); if unrepentant, separate from the error (Romans 16:17).

Guardrails from the Rest of Scripture

Acts 17:11 – “They examined the Scriptures every day to see if these teachings were true.”

1 John 4:1 – “Test the spirits to see whether they are from God.”

2 Timothy 3:16-17 – Scripture equips “for every good work,” including discernment.

Colossians 2:8 – “See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception.”

Galatians 1:8 – Even an angel preaching a different gospel is “under a curse.”

• Jude 3-4 – Contend for the faith; certain men “crept in unnoticed.”

2 Peter 2:1 – False teachers “secretly introduce destructive heresies.”

These passages reinforce that detecting error is not optional—it is an ongoing responsibility for every believer.

Living It Out Together

• Cultivate a church culture where open Bibles sit beside open hearts.

• Encourage expository preaching that lets God set the agenda.

• Share testimonies of growth through correction; celebrate course-adjustments.

• Support leaders who guard the flock, and graciously hold them accountable.

When a congregation collectively treasures the literal, living Word, Balaam-style errors lose their foothold, and Christ’s commendation replaces His rebuke.

In what ways can we remain faithful amidst cultural pressures today?
