How to identify true vs. false prophecy?
How can we discern true prophecy from false, as warned in Jeremiah 23:17?

Setting the Scene

Jeremiah 23:17: “They keep saying to those who despise Me, ‘The LORD has said, “You will have peace.”’ And to all who walk in the stubbornness of their own hearts they say, ‘No calamity will come upon you.’”

False prophets in Jeremiah’s day offered soothing words that contradicted God’s clear warnings. The same danger remains, so the question is how to recognize the genuine voice of God.

Why the Warning Matters

• False prophecy dulls repentance, promising peace where judgment is coming (Jeremiah 6:14; 2 Timothy 4:3–4).

• Counterfeit voices discredit the true work of the Spirit and sow confusion (Matthew 24:24).

• God’s honor is at stake; He has tied His reputation to the unfailing truth of His word (Numbers 23:19).

Biblical Tests for Prophetic Voices

• Conformity to Scripture

– “All Scripture is God-breathed…” (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

– Any prophetic word that contradicts the written Word is automatically false (Isaiah 8:20).

• Fulfillment of Predictive Elements

– “When the word spoken does not come to pass… the LORD has not spoken it” (Deuteronomy 18:22).

– A flawless track record is non-negotiable for one who claims, “Thus says the LORD.”

• Christ-Exalting Focus

– “For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy” (Revelation 19:10).

– True prophecy magnifies Christ’s person and work, not the prophet.

• Moral and Spiritual Fruit

– “You will know them by their fruits” (Matthew 7:15-20).

– Holiness, humility, and obedience mark genuine messengers (Jeremiah 23:21-22).

• Agreement with the Spirit-Filled Community

– “Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others weigh what is said” (1 Corinthians 14:29).

– The local church serves as a safeguard against lone-ranger revelations.

• Inner Witness of the Spirit

– “The anointing you received… teaches you about all things” (1 John 2:27).

– The Spirit never gives peace about error (Romans 8:16).

Practical Steps for Today

1. Saturate your mind with Scripture—daily exposure trains your ear to recognize off-key notes.

2. Pray earnestly for discernment; God delights to give wisdom (James 1:5).

3. Compare every message to the whole counsel of God, not isolated verses.

4. Examine the messenger’s character and accountability structure.

5. Wait for confirmation; truth stands the test of time.

6. Stay connected to a Bible-teaching fellowship where gifts are tested and refined (Ephesians 4:11-16).

Encouragement to Stay Anchored

God has not left His people defenseless. “We have the prophetic word as something completely reliable, and you will do well to pay attention to it” (2 Peter 1:19). Holding fast to Scripture, walking in the Spirit, and remaining in accountable community keep us safely tethered to the true voice of our Shepherd.
