How to keep worship God-centered?
In what ways can we ensure our worship remains solely focused on God?

Setting the Scene

“I will destroy your high places, cut down your incense altars, and pile your dead bodies on the lifeless forms of your idols, and My soul will abhor you.” (Leviticus 26:30)

Israel’s “high places” were literal hills and platforms where rival worship crept in. God’s fierce language underscores how seriously He views any competitor to His glory.

Recognize God’s Jealous Love

Exodus 20:3–5: “You shall have no other gods before Me… for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God.”

Deuteronomy 6:4–5: “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is One. Love the LORD your God with all your heart…”

When God removes idols, He is not acting out of insecurity but out of covenant love that refuses to share His people’s devotion.

Identify Modern “High Places”

• Attaching ultimate worth to career, wealth, entertainment, relationships, or even ministry success

• Seeking emotional experiences rather than God Himself

• Elevating personal opinions above Scripture

• Trusting technology, politics, or self-help more than the Lord’s provision

Practical Steps to Purify Worship

1. Daily Scripture Priority

Psalm 119:11: “I have hidden Your word in my heart that I might not sin against You.”

– Consistent Bible reading exposes subtle idols and recenters affection on God’s revealed will.

2. Honest Heart Checks

Psalm 139:23–24: “Search me, O God… see if there is any offensive way in me.”

– Ask: “What disappoints me most? What do I fear losing? Where do I look for security?”

3. Active Idol Removal

Acts 19:18–19 shows believers publicly burning costly sorcery scrolls. Remove apps, subscriptions, or habits that compete with devotion.

4. Gathered Worship Focus

Hebrews 10:24–25 urges assembling to stir one another toward love and good deeds. Corporate singing, preaching, and communion recalibrate hearts collectively.

5. Steward God’s Gifts, Don’t Worship Them

1 Timothy 6:17: “Put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy.” Appreciate blessings while keeping hope anchored in the Giver.

6. Flee & Replace

1 Corinthians 10:14: “Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.”

– Replace counterfeit affections with prayer, service, and meditation on Christ.

Guard the Heart Continually

Proverbs 4:23: “Guard your heart with all diligence, for from it flow springs of life.”

• Idols creep back; vigilance is lifelong. Regular fasting, Sabbath rest, and accountability friendships keep the spiritual filters clean.

Stay Rooted in Christ

John 4:23–24: “True worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth.”

Colossians 1:18: “So that in everything He might be preeminent.”

When Jesus remains the centerpiece—trusted, obeyed, adored—worship stays undivided, and every lesser “high place” loses its allure.
